KARACHI: The measures taken by the central Bank have been unable to check the rupee’’s slide — as the currency shed another 1.4 percent in interbank trade on Thursday. Pak rupee ended Rs72.10 per U.S dollar compared to Wednesday’’s close of Rs71.10. Trade volume was thin and many deals were struck as high as Rs72.15 in early trade.Factors contribiting to this persistent erosion is the yawning trade deficit, as importers demand more dollars to finance their purchases.Making matters worse, this has become another factor for foreign investors to flee the local stock market, since a falling rupee lowers their earnings.The currency is now down 17 percent since the start of this year and dealers fear that it would hit Moody’’s forecast of Rs78 per U.S dollar by the end of next week.
