PM Gilani says allegations against ISI are unsubstantiated

WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said there is no evidence to support allegations that elements of Pakistan?s premier intelligence agency had any collusion with militants. In an interview with The U.S. newspaper published Thursday he said the Inter Services Intelligence contained no pockets of Taliban sympathy. ?I?m pretty sure about it,? he stated in response to a question, adding the issue over allegations would be addressed and resolved. The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan?s firm commitment to fighting terrorism and emphasized ?The best way to combat the Taliban and Al-Qaeda is through extensive education and economic aid.? ?The root cause of the problem in the tribal areas and Afghanistan is poverty,? he said, adding militants exploit the poor for their own benefit. In addition to economic development Gilani said, intelligence sharing is key to solving the problems in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region. ?We want to have more intelligence sharing with Afghanistan and NATO, so if there?s credible, actionable intelligence, it will be passed to us,? he said. He said Pakistan army chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani is highly supportive of democracy.
