Todd Bachman, his wife Barbara, their daughter Elisabeth and a Chinese guide were attacked as they visited the Drum Tower monument, a popular tourist site in the centre of the city, according to the US Olympic Committee (USOC). The assailant, a 47-year-old man from eastern China, then jumped to his death off the second storey of the monument. “He was one of my closest friends,” said Robyn Mow-Santos who played in the 3-1 win over Japan. “I lost my mom in February and they (the Bachman family) were there for me. Our hearts go out to them. “The death gave us more power in the game. It gave us a reason just to go out there and play the game.” Women’’s team coach Lang Ping admitted the squad had been stunned by the murder. “We were shocked,” she said. “Most of the players called their parents. Arthur praises Amla as South Africa fight back

LONDON: Coach Mickey Arthur praised batsman Hashim Amla, who led a South African fight back on a rain-hit third day of the fourth and final Test against England Africa at the Oval on Saturday. Amla made 71 not out as South Africa reached 110 for two in their second innings, still 12 behind England’’s first innings total. Only 17.5 overs were bowled Saturday before rain, which started falling before lunch, prevented any further play. “We”re right back in it,” said Arthur. “We knew we had to bat well in the second innings and we are even stevens now. If we can string another or two partnerships together it could be quite a good Test match.” Arthur said Amla played a key role in the number three batting position. Good weather is forecast for the remaining two days and South Africa will need to continue to bat well to prevent England from gaining a consolation victory in a series in which the tourists hold a winning 2-0 lead. England coach Peter Moores felt his side were still in a strong position. “We”ll have to bowl well tomorrow but they”re still behind with two key men out.” Amla was the mainstay of the South African innings, reaching a half-century off 64 balls with ten crisply struck boundaries. When rain stopped play he had faced 86 balls and hit 14 fours.
