World Bank says poverty falling, except in Africa

WASHINGTON: The number of people living in poverty sharply fell between 1981 and 2005, but progress was mixed regionally and stalled in Sub-Saharan Africa, a new World Bank study showed Tuesday. Raising the poverty line to 1.25 dollars a day from 1.00 dollar, adjusted to reflect new statistical methods, the World Bank said the number of the world’’s poor fell to 1.4 billion from 1.9 billion over the quarter century. In a major revision of poverty estimates, the Washington-based institution said that the 1.4 billion people in the poorest developing countries — or one in four people — lived below 1.25 dollars a day in 2005. That compared with 1.9 billion in 1981, or one in two people. An earlier estimate based on a dollar-a-day poverty line had found 985 million poor people 2004 and 1.5 billion in 1981. The Bank said its latest estimates show the number of poor had fallen by 500 million since 1981, from 52 percent of the developing world’’s population in 1981 to 26 percent in 2005. The researchers calculated their data using a new poverty line of 1.25 dollars a day for 2005 in the 10-20 poorest countries that was based on improved internationally comparable price data. “As a consequence of the improvements in price data collection and processing, we have discovered that the cost of living is higher in the developing world than we thought,” the 185-nation development lender said in a statement.

Serena Williams still bitter over treatment from umpires

NEW YORK: Eight-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams says the reason she doesn”t have more US Open titles to her name is because the umpires and linesmen have ganged up on her in the past. “One year I really ran into a lot of bad luck where I got the worst calls possible,” said Williams who rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-4 win over Kateryna Bondarenko in her first round match at the 20.6 million dollar US Open on Tuesday. “Honestly, I couldn”t even hit a shot because I was so nervous they would call every ball out. “That really wasn”t my fault. I probably would have won that year, and I was gonna win that year. Unfortunately it didn”t work out.” Williams won the US Open in 1999 and 2002 and has come close in other years. In 2004, she had an on court meltdown during a quarter-final loss to fellow American Jennifer Capriati. Williams hit a backhand inside the sideline at deuce in the first game of the final set that was called good by the linesman but overruled by chair umpire Mariana Alves. The umpire was eventually dismissed from the tournament and the organizers apologized to Williams for the blunder. Some feel that was the driving force to bring in instant replay. “I think it’’s true,” Williams said. This was the first career meeting between Williams and 46th ranked Bondarenko.
