OTTAWA: Low-cost Zoom Airline said Thursday it is seeking court protection from its Canadian and British creditors, as two of its planes were grounded in Calgary and Glasgow and other flights were disrupted. “We have sought creditor protection by filing legal notices of intention to appoint an administrator in both the United Kingdom and Canada,” Hugh Boyle, executive chairman of the Ottawa-based airline, said in a statement. The airline’’s woes, he added, were “a direct consequence of the horrendous increase in the price of aviation fuel and the economic climate.” One of its planes was grounded in Glasgow for failing to pay airport fees, while another in Calgary was yanked out of service by a company that leased the jet to the carrier, leaving passengers stranded in both cities, said reports. Zoom’’s other flights in North America, Europe and the Caribbean were to continue to operate while the company negotiates with its creditors, Boyle said.

LONDON: South Africa captain Graeme Smith will miss Friday’’s third one-day international against England as he struggles to recover from a tennis elbow injury. Smith was due to see a surgeon on Thursday to decide whether he will need an operation to cure the problem. The opening batsman has no chance of featuring at The Oval and is unlikely to take any further part in a series England lead 2-0 with three matches to play. Jacques Kallis has been confirmed as stand-in skipper in Smith’’s absence. Kallis admitted he needed extra time to decide if he wanted the job after complaining about selection policy last year. “I took a day to think about it,” he said. “My biggest stand was people getting involved in selection who shouldn”t have been. That’’s now been sorted out - the president’’s veto doesn”t exist any more. “So I just had to sit down and make sure I had my mind right, and it is something I”m really proud to do.” Kallis has captained his country in seven one-day internationals since 2006 and the all rounder is determined to put the pressure back on England as they try to clinch the series.
