ISLAMABAD, Sept. 12 — At least 12 people were killed in northwest Pakistan on Friday in a suspected U.S. airstrike that Pakistani intelligence officials and experts say could further aggravate growing tensions with the United States over military operations in the region.

Governor discusses fresh Pak-Afhan peace jirga initiative

PESHAWAR: The NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani Friday held a preliminary meeting on convening the Mini Pak-Afghan Jirga at Islamabad after Eid-ul-Fitr.Prominent tribal elders from FATA besides Peace Envoy for NWFP Afrasyab Khattak, Senator Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim, ACS FATA Habibullah Khan and Secretary to Governor Arbab Muhammad Arif attended the meeting. The Governor reminded the participants that Pak-Afghan Loya Jirga, held at Kabul on 9-11 August 2007 had mandated the formation of Mini Pak-Afghan Jirga to monitor its recommendations and promote dialogue and mediation between warring factions.Now he added, The Mini jirga, to include 25 members each from Pakistan and Afghanistan side was being scheduled to be held in Islamabad after Eid ul Fitr. The Jirga, he added would discuss and adopt strategies to broker peace between the govt. and its opponents in Afghanistan. Besides, the jirga will also explore the possibility of holding another session of Pak-Afghan Loya Jirga at Islamabad. The participants appreciated this fresh initiative and emphasized that peace and stability was achievable only through dialogue and not through war.
