PA passes resolution against IMF agriculture tax

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly here on Friday during its 10th session adopted a resolution against the imposition of agriculture tax with an overwhelming majority, demanding of the federal and provincial governments not to impose any tax on farmers.Waris Kahlo and Ahmed Khan Baloch of PML-N tabled a joint resolution regarding the matter during the question hour. The resolution states that as the government had sought loans owing to the worst economic conditions of the country, the IMF had handed over a long list of demands. It states that since an agreement has been made with the IMF and now reports are coming that agriculture tax was being imposed. Though State Minister Hina Rubbani Khar, in a policy statement, denied imposing any such tax but even then this House wants to express its reaction and views against it, the resolution states. It further states that since the farmers are already paying provincial income tax, sales tax, water tax, local rate tax and revenue tax, therefore, this House recommends that the federal and provincial government should not impose any kind of agriculture tax as farmers are unable to bear the burden of the imposition of any more tax which would destroy the agri sector. The PA members passed the resolution with an overwhelming majority. On this occasion, Senior Minister Raja Riaz said he had already given his statement on behalf of the federal government that no such tax was being imposed as it was purely a provincial government subject. He said the provincial law minister had also assured the house that imposing agriculture tax was a provincial government subject and Punjab was not imposing that kind of tax. He said in the presence of his policy statement and the law minister’’s assurance, there was no need to pass the resolution. However, the movers of the resolution and their supporters said they did so in the wide interest of the public.
