NEW YORK: The price of New York crude oil fell below 40 dollars a barrel Wednesday for the first time since July 2004, as traders shrugged off a record OPEC output cut.In afternoon trade on the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude for delivery in January plunged as low as 39.94 dollars, its lowest level since July 14, 2004.Shortly after the contract recovered to trade at 40.31 dollars around 1940 GMT, a decline of 3.29 dollars from Tuesday’’s close. The market action came after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries approved a record output cut of 2.2 million barrels of oil a day. OPEC ministers meeting in Oran, Algeria, agreed the output reduction in a bid to shore up prices that have slumped since hitting record highs above 147 dollars in July. However, the market took direction from news that US crude reserves climbed across the board last week — indicating weaker demand in the world’’s biggest energy consumer.
