CM Punjab for eliminating illiteracy, ignorance

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that elimination of illiteracy and ignorance as well as promotion of quality education is his toppriority for equipping the youth with modern education so as to ensure a bright future for the country. He was presiding over a meeting regarding recruitment of educators in Punjab here Friday. Provincial Finance Minister Tanveer Ashraf Kaira, Members Provincial Assembly Ch. Abdul Razzaq Dhilon, Maj (R) Abdul Rehman, Chairman Taskforce on Education Raja Muhammad Anwar, Addl. Chief Secretary,Secretary Higher Education and Schools, Commissioners of Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sahiwal and Sargodha divisions were present. He said that 40,000 educators are being recruited in the province and merit and complete transparency is being ensured in the recruitment process. He issued instructions for setting up a special steering committee comprising divisional commissioners, elected representatives and district education officers for close monitoring and scrutiny of the process of recruitment of educators. The Chief Minister said that government is utilizing all available resources for the uplift of education sector and record funds have been allocated for this purpose. He said that a large number of posts of teachers are vacant in schools due to which students are facing serious problems. He said that provision of quality education and filling of vacancies of teachers in schools is the responsibility of the government and it will discharge obligations in this regard. He said that there is a need to equip the new generation with modern and quality education otherwise the history will never forgive us. He said that the goal of rapid development and prosperity can only be achieved through uplift of education sector. He said that attendance of teachers especially lady teachers in far-flung and remote areas is also a problem and there is a need to evolve an effective strategy in this regard so that the future of students could be safeguarded. He issued instructions for the formation of a special committee headed by Addl. Chief Secretary which will submit its recommendations for the recruitment of teachers in far flung areas of backward districts. He said that recruitment of local male and female teachers in remote areas is essential for ensuring their attendance in schools.

Garments shops catch fire in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: Some shops of garments, located in the Saddar area in Rawalpindi, have caught fire on early Sunday.The shops are located in a plaza in the Saddar area of Rawalpindin while fire brigade crew and rescue workers have been trying to overcome the ablaze, sources said.The blazes have been leaping through the windows of the building meanwhile, rescue teams have rescued some people who were found caught in the plaza while some others, trying to escape, jumped from the third floor of the building who have been shifted to hospitals.Some more people are still caught in the building and are trying to escape from fire, rescue sources said.

Kakar refutes award of contract to UK based company

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Housing and Works, Rehmatullah Kakar Friday said that no contract is being awarded to a UK based company and termed, the allegations as well as media campaign against him and the government, baseless and concocted. “There is no truth in the news report that Rs. 60 billion contract has been awarded to a UK based company ”Imperial Houses” without inviting open bids,” the minister told a hurriedly press conference here today. The minister said only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the said company which is not a final legal document. Such kinds of MoUs have been signed with 15 other foreign firms including USA, Canada, UK, Italy, Malaysia and UAE based companies. Foreign companies have shown keen interest to invest in housing sector in Pakistan but such baseless campaign may block their way, he added. The UK based company will construct 30,000 housing units including 15,000 each in Lahore and Faisalabad, he said. He said the whole procedure has been done with full transparency as government is committed to attract more foreign investment in the country despite facing a lot of problems and scandalization of such events is no service of the nation. All MoUs are in the Ministry of Law for scrutiny and after its final approval from there and taking comments from concerned agencies it will be finally signed, the minister said.
