Oil falls below $43 a barrel in Asia

SINGAPORE: Oil prices fell below $43 a barrel Friday in Asia after Russia and Ukraine said a dispute over natural gas payments wouldn”t affect shipments to Western Europe.Light, sweet crude for February delivery fell $1.73 to $42.84 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midday in Singapore. Trading was closed Thursday for New Year’’s Day.The contract rose $5.57 on Wednesday, the last trading day of2008, to settle at $44.60 after Russia threatened to cut off natural gas supplies to Ukraine. Russia followed through with that threat Thursday, though both countries pledged they would keep supplies to the rest of Europe flowing.Russia’’s gas monopoly Gazprom shut off gas supplies after talks broke down over Ukraine’’s payments for past shipments and a new price contract for 2009. Gazprom said it had boosted natural gas deliveries through other pipelines to Western Europe.The European Union depends on Russia for about a quarter of its gas, with some 80 percent of that delivered through pipelines controlled by Ukraine.Concerns that the week-old conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could disrupt supplies in the oil-rich Middle East helped keep prices from falling further.

Hyderabad people protest on power outages

HYDERABAD: Scores of people staged protest due to sever load-shedding in several places of Hyderabad on Thursday.People in rage set tyres on fire, clogged many roads and chanted slogans against Hyderabad Electric Supply Corporation (HESCO), sources said. Affectees informed media that electricity in their areas was cut for eight to ten hours however; police later dispersed people having assured them of the resumption of electricity.

Magnitude 2.2 tremors felt in Karachi

KARACHI: Some of the areas of Karachi have felt jolts on Thursday, Geo T.V reported.The areas included Landhi, Korangi, Malir and Ibrahim Haideri where people had to rush to the open-air places in panic.According to Chief metrology officer Muhammad Riaz, it was of 2.2 magnitude on Richter scale while the epicenter he told was Southeastern part of Karachi.No loss of life or property was reported, he added. Meanwhile, jolts were also felt in different areas of Balochistan.
