ISLAMABAD: Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf told the National Assembly on Thursday that the present government has restructured the Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) and set new target for the same as during past five years it failed to deliver any results.Responding to a question during question-answer session, the minister said that government wants that the country should generate 7000-mega watt electricity from alternate energy sources in coming couple of years.He told the house that in coming few weeks a Turkish firm would install five windmills in Jam Peer locality near Karachi. The total quantity of electricity generated through renewable energy sources during 2007-08 was 35.240 mega watts, he added.Ashraf said that several proposals are being considered to use renewable energy sources for electrification in the urban areas which include solar street lighting, solar lighting for billboards, micro wind turbines. He said that the private sector has already installed few micro wind turbines on billboards in Karachi for lighting purposes.Replying to a question, the minister said that Rs. 20,000 were allocated in PSDP 2007-08 for Raising of Mangla Dam out of which Rs. 18,000 had been released by WAPDA during the financial year 2007-08 and progress up to December 31,2008 was 78 per cent against scheduled 88 per cent.

LAHORE: Unannounced load-shedding of electricity continues across the country including Lahore.In large cities power load-shedding for up to 13 hours is undertaken while in villages up to 18 hours.No schedule of shedding the power load has so far been issued despite repeated promises by the concerned authorities.The present power shortfall is about 3,000 MW, resulting in frequent and prolonged power outages without prior announcements in this regard.

KARACHI: Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Thursday directed KSE members to submit 6-moth financial statements.SECP officials told Geo News that notices have been sent to over a dozen members to directing them to submit financial statements relating to the last six moths.Stock members, however, say that the time allowed for submission of the financial statements is not enough and that its is impossible to get the job done before the deadline.

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Environment Hameedullah Jan Afridi has said that government is committed to check environmental pollution and for this purpose various steps are being taken including promotion of CNG as it is envirnment friendly fuel.Speaking as chief guest at the 5th International CNG Conference on Thursday at a local hotel, Afridi said that the government alone or any of the ministries could not meet the global challenge of combating environmental pollution and all stake holders in the society have to play role in this regard.The Minister said that CNG is no doubt an environment friendly and economical fuel adding that top romote this cleaner and greener technology is need of the hour.He said environment pollution is the global challenge and the government has made a comprehensive plan to create awareness among the public for keeping environment clean.Afridi appreciated the role of CNG industry and Pakistan State Oil (PSO) for their contribution in eliminating the contents causing pollution in the skies of the country.He said there is a good possibility that gas prices might be reduced in July this year, adding there is no restriction on setting up CNG stations.The Minister further told that the government gave incentives as well as subsidy for the promotion of CNG transport adding that this project will be launched in all big cities of the country and all the hurdles in that project will be removed.He assured his every possible support to the CNG industry. He asked the CNG Association to cooperate with the government for the implementation of the policies as this is a common cause to clean the environment, he observed.
