Full-scale emergency exercise held at BBI airport

ISLAMABAD: A full-scale emergency exercise “Air X-09″, jointly conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in collaboration with various bodies was held Wednesday here at the Benazir Bhutto International (BBI) airport.CAA being the signatory of ICAO Conventions is bound to implement the standards and recommended practices to ensure safe and smooth airport operations and this exercise was one step to achieve the ICAO Convention standards.This exercise is held every year to check the performance of all the concerned departments including, Pakistan Air Force, CDA, Rescue 1122, District Hospital Rawalpindi, Military Hospital Rawalpindi, Polyclinic Hospital, Edhi Welfare Trust and PIA in the field of relief and rescue if any emergency at the airport arises.A mock scene was created at the airport by setting some material ablaze to check the response time of Fire Brigade. Later, the false injured passengers were rescued from PIA’’s 777 aircraft and shifted to the ambulances for their onward shifting to the hospitals.An especially designed helicopter also took part in the rescue operation as air ambulance.Special Monitors to review the whole exercise were also present at the scene.Senior officials of CAA and other bodies taking part in the exercise were also present in the exercise.

Police arrest over 11 suspects in Lahore attack case

FAISALABAD: Eleven suspects have been arrested from different areas of Faisalabad on charges of involvement in Lahore Police Training Centre attack.After Lahore, law enforcing agencies have also become active in Faisalabad.In this regard police conducted raids in different parts of the city arrested over 11 suspects associated with various banned outfits. They are presently under investigation.

Five policemen dead in Dirbala attack

DIRBALA: Five policemen were killed when unknown persons attacked a police mobile van in Shernagal area of Dirbala. The deceased also include a SHO and an ASP.According to details, the assailants first opened fire on the police mobile van before firing rockets on it, killing five police personnel.Later, the attackers escaped along with the weapons of the police.

Pak, Afghanistan, Turkey to intensify cooperation against terrorism

ANKARA: The presidents of Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan met to discuss greater cooperation on security and intelligence sharing in a trilateral meeting here on Wednesday.In the meeting held at Presidential Palace, President Asif Ali Zardari, Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Afghan President Hamid Karzai discussed various issues of importance including ways to address the menace of terrorism by adopting a regional approach. The military and intelligence chiefs of the three countries also attended the trilateral meeting.Addressing a joint press conference with President Zardari and Afghan President Hamid Karazai, Turkish President Gul said the security services of Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan would step up cooperation against terrorism and his country would also arrange special counter-terrorism courses for the two countries.Earlier, President Zardari had a meeting with President Abdullah Gul, which was followed by his talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Turkish President and Prime Minister also held separate meetings with President Hamid Karzai. The meeting is aimed at discussing the ways to improve regional situation and making joint efforts for ensuring peace.Turkey had brought the presidents of Afghanistan and Pakistan together at tripartite summits held in 2007 and 2008, where the talks aimed at reducing tensions over militant attacks along the Pak-Afghan border and to build trust between the two neighbors.

Stocks surge on NSD profit rate cut

Man shot dead in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Unknown person shot dead a man in Gulberg area here on Wednesday.According to reports, unknown persons tried to kidnap a man named Naimat. They opened indiscriminate fire when Naimat put resistance, killing him on the spot. The kidnapers were managed to flee. The residents of the area protest the killing, burnt tyres, chanted anti government and administration slogans and blocked the Sunahri Masjid Road. They were later dispersed peacefully.
