UN pledges support for development of operation-affected areas

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari Friday said massive support and assistance of the world community would be required to undertake the second phase of rehabilitation and reconstruction of displaced people.

Talking to UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Sir John Holmes, the President appreciated the humanitarian work of the UN agencies to garner support and assistance for the displaced people.

The President said the IDPs will start returning to their homes from Monday in areas that have already been cleared and secured by the security forces. He said that the areas thus cleared have been identified and the IDPs were being informed through media.

The UN under Secretary General thanked the President for the cooperation being extended by the government to UN relief operations and assured UN?s full support in the long-term development of the affected areas.

Those who attended the meeting included Secretary General to the President M. Salman Faruqui, Martin Mogwanja, Representative UNICEF Manual Besseler and other senior officials.
