Country?s inflation rate at 19 month low

KARACHI: The rate of country?s inflation has dropped to 19 month low in the first month of the financial year 2009-10, increasing the possibility of the State Bank to reduce discount rate in its upcoming monetary policy.

According to figures released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS), the rate of inflation declined to 11.17 percent in the month of July from 13.13 in June.

The reasons cited for this decrease are: reduction in prices of some food items besides government?s policy to stabilize prices of petroleum products.

The rate of inflation surged to 20.77 percent in the last.

According to economic experts, the central bank could reduce its discount rate by 1 to 1.5 percent in view of the existing inflation rate.
