ISLAMABAD: Director General for Political Affairs UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Mark Lyall Grant called on President Asif Ali Zardari here at the Presidency on Tuesday.
During the meeting matters regarding to bilateral relations between the two countries, the measures taken for the relief and rehabilitation of displaced people and the reconstruction process in war-torn areas of Swat and Malakand were discussed.
President Zardari appreciated the support of British government for the relief and rehabilitation of the IDPs and said that with the help of international assistance and mobilizing indigenous resources Pakistan will undertake the process of reconstruction in Swat and Malakand.
Matters pertaining to the comprehensive stabilization and socio-economic development strategy for Malakand being finalized were also discussed.
The plan will be presented in the Foreign Minister?s conference of Friends of Democratic Pakistan?s (FODP) meeting to be held in Turkey later this month before being taken up in the summit meeting of FODP in New York next month.
The President said that the two countries enjoy close relations and stressed for further enhancing political and trade ties between the two countries.
Mark Lyall Grant assured support of his government in the relief and rehabilitation of the displaced people and hailed Pakistan?s role in the war against extremism and terrorism.

KARACHI: The benchmark KSE-100 Index of Karachi Stock Exchange Tuesday slipped 38 points to close at 8,045.
Today, the share market started bullish and at one stage the Index was seen at 178 points up. But later profit taking by some investors eroded the early hour gains and the Index finished at the current level.
The market turnover was recorded at 200 million shares.
DG Khan Cement took the lead in terms of volume which gained paisas 39 to close at Rs41.22.
Market analysts speculate technical correction in the capital market in the coming days.

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) — Pakistan, Asia’s third-largest user of sugar, plans to import 375,000 metric tons of the sweetener to reduce local prices. Of the total, 300,000 tons of raw sugar and 75,000 tons of refined sugar will be imported, Pakistan’s Finance Advisor Shaukat Tarin said today by phone from Islambad.

ISLAMABAD: The British High Commission refused to issue visas to the Pakistan blind cricket team after which its tour of England has been cancelled.
Chairman Pakistan Blind Cricket Council Syed Sultan Shah told Geo News that the Pakistan blind cricket team had to go to England for playing three one-dayers and a Twenty20 match for which requests were given for visas to the British High Commission on July 8.
However, the British High Commission returned the passports on Tuesday saying that the Pakistan blind cricket team does not meet the required merit.
Sultan Shah said that the team has earlier made tours of various countries including England and not issuing visas to it is disappointing.

TOKYO: Japan’’s central bank in its monetary policy meeting kept its key interest unchanged.
The Bank of Japan kept the uncollateralized overnight call rate at 0.1 percent, by unanimous vote.
The central bank said the domestic conditions have stopped worsening, with public investments increasing, and exports and production also picking up. Private consumption, although showed signs of improvement, remained weak. The decline in the core consumer prices accelerated.
The central bank said baseline scenario through fiscal 2010, is for the medium-to-long term growth to remain generally unchanged. Moreover, the central bank projects the economy to start recovering in the second half of the fiscal year 2009, supported by domestic measures along with recovery in the overseas market and improvement in the global financial markets.
