Faithfuls begin holy month of Ramazan

ISLAMABAD: The holy month of Ramazan has begun across most of the Muslim world, ushering in dawn to dusk fasting and extra prayer.

The ninth month of the Muslim calendar, Ramazan marks opening of the gates of heaven while gates of hell are closed.

The world?s estimated one billion observant Muslims will abstain from food and smoking during the daylight hours, and hold extra prayers at night.

Ramadan ends with the first sighting of the new moon culminating in the three-day festival of fast-breaking - Eid-ul-Fitr.

PM sets ex-mill sugar price at Rs45/kg

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani presiding over a meeting here Saturday fixed the ex-mill sugar price at Rs45 per kilogram for the next three months.

The meeting also decided that there will be no restriction on inter-provincial transportation of sugar and wheat.

According to PM House spokesman, the ex-mill price of sugar will be inclusive of all the taxes while the government has already slashed general sales tax by 50 percent on sugar.

The Prime Minister, during meeting, directed the officials of Ministry of Industries and Production to ensure availability of sugar at Rs38 per kg at utility stores across the country. An effective mechanism of monitoring be devised with the cooperation of the provinces, he ordered.

The meeting decided for the chief ministers of the four provinces to convene fortnightly meetings for determination of sugar price on long-term basis.

Tonsa flooding leaves thousands homeless

DI KHAN: Dozens of villages have been inundated in Tehsil Tonsa due to ongoing flood, leaving thousands of people stranded and homeless.

The people trapped in water are waiting for government relief.

Many villages of Tehsil Tonsa of Dera Ghazi Khan, one of the most populous cities in Punjab province, were flooded as water splashed in River Indus entered the area.

Thousands of people have migrated to the safer places on their own assistance. However, hundreds of people trapped in water were still waiting for help. Local people were busy to shift these people to safer places through hired boats.

The floods destroyed thousands of acres cotton and mustard crops. The affectees said they were compelled to live under the open sky and waiting for government relief.
