Sharifuddin Peerzada calls on Altaf Hussain

KARACHI: Seasoned lawyer, Sharifuddin Peerzada called on Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain in London on Sunday.

The senior lawyer met Altaf Hussain during his short stop-over at London on his way to the United States, said a statement issued by MQM here.

During a brief meeting, they discussed the prevailing situation in the country and others matters of mutual interests.

Both the leaders agreed that the reconciliation is vital for the national integrity and stability of democracy in the country.

The Rabta Committee members Muhammed Anwar, Tariq javed, Salim shehzad, Mustafa Azizabadi and Asif Siddiqui were also present in the meeting.

Govt slashes Sales Tax on sugar by 50pc

ISLAMABAD: The government has announced to charge sales tax at the rate of eight per cent on local supplies of sugar by slashing Sales Tax by 50 percent, says a press release issued by FBR here on Sunday.

The announcement has been made following issuance on Sunday of SRO (1)/2009 whereby “sales tax on local supplies of sugar shall be charged at the rate of eight per cent with immediate effect and until further orders”.

Previously, the government was charging 16 percent Salex Tax at the rate of RS29/kg, which has now been cut off to 50 percent.

According to the FBR, Rs4.53/kg were being received as Sales Tax on sugar, which will be reduced to Rs2.25/kg.

The FBR press release said the notification will come into force with immediate effect until further orders.

Suicide attack kills 3, hurts 15 others in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Three persons were killed, including 2 women and 15 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a house in Momin Town at Dala Zak, CCPO Safwat Ghayoor said on Sunday.

The suicide bomber first opened fire then blew himself up.

The bodies and injured have been shifted to Lady Reading hospital.

Suicide attack kills 3 in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Three persons were killed, including 2 women and 6 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a house in Momin Town at Dala Zak on Sunday.

According to a worker of Edhi Welfare Sources, the incident was a suicide attack and that the suicide bomber first opened fire and then blew himself up.

According to Geo TV, it has not yet been confirmed whether it was a suicide attack. He said investigation is being carried out.

DCO Peshawar, Sahibzada Anis said nothing could be confirmed about occurrence of any deaths. He said 11 people were injured including women and children. Four of these people are critically injured, he added.

The bodies and injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

Seven suspects along with suicide jackets arrested in Karachi

KARACHI: Seven suspects associated with banned outfits and allegedly involved in attacks on former president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Shaukat Aziz have been arrested from Baloch Colony area along with suicide jackets and explosives, DIG CID Saood Mirza said here on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference, the DIG CID said that police raided a place near Defence View and arrested seven accused identified as Muhammad Aziz alias Salman, Muhammad Shahzad alias Pehlwan alis Munna, Ghulam Muhammad alias Umer, Shahbaz alias Mian, Khalil Toori, Alam Zeb alias Hazifa and Shakil alias Hunzila.

Three suicide jackets and over 15 kilograms explosives, 4 kalashnikovs, 4 pistols and gas masks besides over 2 kg heroin and other items were recovered.

DIG CID Masood Mirza said one of the arrested identified as Shahzad alias Munna alias Pehlwan was involved in carrying out the attack on former president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Shaukat Aziz. He said another accused Khalil Ahmed is the brother of Qasim Toori, arrested two years ago.
