Bullet-proof vehicles for all minister not yet possible: Malik

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said government cannot provide all the Ministers with bulletproof vehicles and that the bullet-proof car he is using is not official but his own.

Talking to media, after visiting Hamid Saeed Kazmi at Poly Clinic here he said the investigation agencies will soon trace the elements involved in the murder attack on the Federal Minister.

He told the reporters that six people have been arrested after the attack and they are under investigation.

The Interior Minister categorised the attack as target killing.

President Asif Ali Zardari has issued directives to get new vehicles for all the Ministers, Malik added.

Govt claims fall flat as prices continue to spiral

KARACHI: Food items continue to be sold at inflated rates without any respite during the holy month of Ramazan.

Rise in petrol price has further contributed to the increase in the rate of inflation.

The Karachiites have complained that fruits and vegetables are not available at subsidized prices at Ramazan bazaars. There is no difference in the prices of goods at Ramazan bazaars and open market, they said.

District Administration in Quetta has set up only one Ramazan bazaar instead of four, and it also comprises of only seven stalls having a limited variety of goods.

Prices of fruits, beans, rice, milk, yogurt and other items, besides sugar and flour have swelled manifold in Quetta during the holy month of Ramazan.

Though measures, taken by government in Lahore have made the flour and sugar available in market, however the prices have failed to ebb down.

According to the District administration, shopkeepers who are caught overcharging are being fined.

Fifty to 100 percent raise in the prices of daily commodities have been witnessed in various cities of NWFP including Peshawar, where retailers are selling goods at prices set by their own will instead of following the price lists provided by the government.

Fire erupts in unit-103 of Guddu Power Station

JACOBABAD: Guddu Thermal Power Station has caught fire causing suspension of power supply to various areas of Sindh and Balochistan.

According to JESCO sources fire suddenly erupted in unit-103 of the Power Station where efforts are underway to control the flames, while two helicopters have been called in from Karachi.

The incident has resulted in suspension of power supply to Kashmor, Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Thal, Jacobabad, Ghari Khero in Sindh and to District Jaffarabad, Naserabad, Chattar Tamboh and other areas in Balochistan.

LHC orders sugar sale at Rs 40/kg

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered Punjab government to ensure availability of sugar at Rs40 per kilogram across the province.

In a short verdict on a case related to sugar crisis, LHC Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif also ordered the provincial government to ensure uniform rate of sugar in Sunday bazaar, Ramazan bazaar and special discount bazaars besides open market.

The verdict declared the Punjab government as completely independent in recovering hoarded sugar.

The court ordered the Chief Secretary Punjab to inform about this verdict to all the DCOs.

Earlier, in his remarks the LHC Chief Justice said he is not in favor of setting up cheap bazaars in Ramazan, arguing that sugar should be sold at a uniform rate everywhere.

The counsel of Sugar Mills Association Shahid Karim holding the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) responsible for the crisis, said the TCP should have kept a stock of 700,000 tonnes sugar.

ECNEC approves Rs 128.60 bln for KCR: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Thursday approved 20 projects worth Rs 260 billion including Karachi Circular Railway System to provide modern transport services to the people, said Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira.

Briefing the media persons about the decisions taken by the ECNEC meeting chaired by Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen here, he said the project like Karachi Circular Railway would be expanded to the other major cities of the country.

The Minister said the meeting also decided to conduct third party evaluation of the project costing Rs 128.60 billion with the sole objective to ensure transparency and saving of cost.

Qamar Zaman Kaira made it clear the third party evaluation would not affect the overall cost as well as execution of the project.

The Minister said the other main project approved was to allow Pakistan Railways to purchase 202 Rail coaches to make the organization more viable and profit-making entity.

The Minister said Pakistan Railways was in dire need of such coaches and the ECNEC has accorded the approval for the Rs 15.9 billion project in view of the reforms being introduced in the organisation.

Similarly, he said, 16 other water related projects were approved including 10 small dams projects to ensure water storage and make Pakistan self-sufficient in food area.

These all projects would cost Rs 57 billion, the Minister said adding that in the current financial year the government has allocated an amount of Rs 2.5 billion for the purpose.

He said the amount earmarked for the small dams in four provinces included for Balochistan Rs 800 million, NWFP 700 million, Sindh Rs 500 million, and Punjab Rs 500 million.

?We will try our best to complete small dams projects to ensure autarky and more such dams would also be constructed in other feasible areas?, Kaira said while replying to a question.
