ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin said implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) is important to increase the revenues and said customs check posts will be establish to curb the smuggling.

Addressing a tax conference organized by FBR, Tarin said Pakistan?s economy couldn?t afford further tax relief whereas implementation of VAT could raise the tax ratio from 6 to 8 percent in national income.

Talking to media, finance minister said VAT could increase revenues up to Rs.600 billion. He said tax relief on medicines and other items should be reviewed and added that corrupt tax officers will be treated strictly.

Committee agrees on handing LB system to provinces

ISLAMABAD: The Constitutional Reforms Committee of the Parliament has reached an agreement for the repeal of 58 (2) B and handing local bodies system to the provinces.

The committee met here at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Mian Raza Rabbani.

According to sources, the meeting reviewed in detail various points of LFO besides suggestions forwarded by different parties regarding Article-1 of the constitution and formation of new provinces.

The majority of the members of Constitutional Reforms Committee opposed formation of new provinces. However, there was consensus among the members on renaming NWFP. They said consultations with all the parties must be held before any name is chosen for the province.

The committee will meet again Saturday morning.

Army Chief visits Kalam, stresses respect for law

RAWALPINDI: The Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani (COAS) visited Barikot and Kalam today where he was briefed about the return of displaced people.

He appreciated the efforts of Security Forces to bring peace in the valley and in assisting the return of displaced people. COAS directed that the respect of law be maintained by all.

COAS visited the Rehabilitation Facility Sabaoon (morning light) which has been established in Barikot for psychological treatment of the children, who were forcibly taken away by the terrorists. A team of specialist doctors both from the Army and civil is dedicated for this purpose. 32 children are presently undergoing the rehabilitation process.

General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani also interacted with the notables of the area. He remained with them for some time and discussed issues related to their resettlement and rehabilitation. The locals assured their full support to the Army for maintaining peace and order in the valley.

They reiterated that terrorists are not only the enemies of Islam and Pakistan but also of the people of Swat. COAS appreciated the locals for their timely and accurate tip-offs against the left-over terrorists in the Valley.

COAS also visited the newly built community police training center. He appreciated the spirit and determination of local youth to fight against the terrorists. He interacted with the recruits and praised their high morale.

COAS later pinned the gallantry awards on officers and men who displayed acts of valour and bravery during operation Rah-e-Raast. Earlier, on arrival, COAS was received by Lieutenant General Muhammad Masood Aslam, Corps Commander.

War to continue till extremists are uprooted

KALAM: Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Friday said that Pak army has broken the back of terrorists and the war will continue until the complete elimination of extremists.

When COAS Kayani arrived in Swat?s scenic place Kalam, he was accorded warm welcome by Pak jawans.

Addressing the jawans and local veterans on the occasion, he said the security forces would continue the war until the extremists are completely swept away.
