Notification lifting ban on pillion riding issued

KARACHI: Sindh Government has issued Notification lifting the ban on pillion riding in Karachi and Hyderabad from Thursday midnight to September 22.

According to the Notification issued by the Sindh Home Department, the ban imposed on pillion riding under Section 144 in Karachi and Hyderabad will be lifted from midnight of Thursday to September 22.

It may be mentioned here that ban on pillion imposed in Karachi and Hyderabad had been extended from time to time and at last it was imposed for an indefinite period.

Clocks to be rewound by one hour from Oct 1

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Government has decided to restore the previous time by moving the clocks backward by one hour from October 1.

A formal announcement to this effect will be made after the Prime Minister grants approval in this regard.

The Federal Government had the clocks forwarded by one hour at the onset of summer season on the request of the Ministry of Water and Power with an aim to save energy.

PEPCO saved up to 300 to 350 MW electricity under the daylight saving time.

Food security govt?s foremost priority: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday said food security is the foremost priority of the government and vowed that every effort would be made in this regard.

The Prime Minister was talking to Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Muhammad Gondal Thursday, who briefed him about the food situation as well as progress on various initiatives taken for the welfare of farmers.

Gilani appreciated the introduction of best quality seed and hoped that this would help increase the per acre yield and benefit the growers at large.

The minister said under the direction of the Prime Minister, all out efforts were being made to ensure provision of best quality seeds to the farmers so as to increase per acre yield.

He also apprised the Prime Minister regarding the progress on crop insurance scheme which the government was planning to launch soon.

Afridi, Gul nominated for ?best performance of the year?

DUBAI: The ICC has short listed the nominations for the annual awards here on Tuesday.

From Pakistan, Saeed Ajmal and Sana Mir have been dropped from the list while Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul has been included in the list for Twenty20 cricket only whereas he was dropped from the ODI list.

The selection panel of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has short listed the long list which was earlier announced for the ICC Awards 2008 and 2009.

Name of any Pakistani cricketer was already not included in the lists of ?Player of the Year? and ?Test Player of the Year? while the name of fast bowler Umar Gul was excluded from the One-day list and Saeed Ajmal from the list of Twenty20 cricket.

Pakistan?s Sana Mir has also been excluded from the list of ?Women?s Player of the Year?.

However, names of Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul remained included in the Twenty20 list along with Tillekaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka and Chris Gayle of the West Indies.

Umpires list has also been short listed and only four umpires were nominated. This list also includes two umpires from Pakistan ? Aleem Dar and Asad Rauf.

The ICC Award ceremony will be held on October 1 during the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

CDWP allocates Rs1 bln for Swat

ISLAMABAD: Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved as many as 30 major projects including a development package for Swat.

Chaired by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Sardar Asif Ahmed Ali, CDWP hold a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday.

The projects approved by CDWP include Rs1 billion development package for Swat, whereas Rs9.25 billion have been allocated for the construction of a bridge linking Ratto Dero and Khairpur; Rs500 million for higher educational projects; Rs760 million for a countrywide survey on social life style and Rs450 million for expansion of Bajor Grid Station.

The meeting also approved Rs99 million for the upgrading of the Och Canal and Rs563 million for Chashma Right Wing Canal.

Lahore: Factory catches fire, 10 women hurt

LAHORE: At least 10 women sustained burnt injures as a factory located in Bandar Road area of Lahore caught fire, while many other people are still trapped in the basement of the affected building.

According to the reports flames suddenly erupted at Bandar Road, where rescue teams have arrived and started rescue work.

Injured women are being shifted to Meo Hospital, whereas 8 fire-engines are trying to control the flames.
