FBR sets up tax facilitation centers across country

ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has set up facilitation desks/kiosks all across Pakistan to help taxpayers filing their income tax returns before the September 30 deadline.

The kiosks and Tax Facilitation Centers (TFCs) have been established in all major urban centres to provide technical support to taxpayers.

A formal ceremony to mark the opening of the TFCs will be held in Lahore tomorrow (Saturday) where FBR Chairman Sohail Ahmad will speak as chief guest at the inauguration of a facilitation desk/kiosk in Liberty area.

The board has further clarified that e-filing mode for the submission of income tax returns is required only for individuals and companies with whose declared income is Rs 500,000 or more per annum and not for ordinary traders and individuals whose income falls below the specific threshold.

President Zardari, Miliband meet in London

LONDON: President Asif Ali Zardari held meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband here on Saturday, Geo news said.

According to sources, two leaders exchanged views on the bilateral ties including overall situation of peace in the region.

They also discussed the forthcoming meeting of Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) during their meeting, sources claimed.

Saudi Arab, Gulf countries to celebrate Eid today

JEDDAH: Official announcements have been made after sighting of Shawwal moon in Saudi Arab, Gulf and other middle-eastern countries to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday.

The Supreme Council of Saudi Arab in a statement said credible reports of sighting Shawwal moon have been received. Therefore, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, it said.

Meanwhile, official announcements have been made of not sighting Shawwal moon in Jordan, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar and Palestine.

India, Afghanistan blamed to back militants in Pak

ISLAMABAD: A report submitted to Pakistan high officials by a joint investigation team has allegedly claimed that the 23 arrested commanders of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have confessed involvement of secret departments of India, including RAW, and Afghanistan in supporting militants in Pakistan.

According to reports, the militant commanders, including Sim Khan, Mahmood Khan and Maulvi Umer, who were arrested during operation Rah-e-Rast, have confessed that they were provided financial aid, weapons and special training by secret agencies from India and Afghanistan to fight against the Pakistan Army.

The report stated that secret agencies from India were in contact with militants in Jalalabad, Kandahar and Mazar Sharif and the militants went to their collaborators via secret ways where they were invited to feasts and they were provided weapons and money earned by the narcotics trade, the Dawn reported on Saturday.

The report also revealed that some militants received special war training from Afghanistan.

Education budget to be raised to 7% of GDP by 2015: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday said the government accords high priority to socio-economic sector in accordance with the manifesto of Pakistan Peoples Party, adding that all efforts would be made to provide relief to the masses at their doorsteps.

The Prime Minister was talking to his Special Assistant on Social Sector Shahnaz Wazir Ali who briefed him on the status of various projects undertaken by the federal government for the socio-economic uplift of people.

Gilani while underlining the importance of education and health said no nation could make progress without having a strong educational base.

He said it was the government?s responsibility to ensure provision of health facilities to the people and the government was well-aware of its duty.

In this regard, he added, the government had planned to increase the education budget to 7 percent of GDP by the year 2015.
