NEW YORK: The Obama Administration?s special envoy Richard Holbrooke met with President Asif Ali Zardari and discussed US-Pakistan cooperation in wide-ranging areas.
The US presidential representative reaffirmed Washington?s commitment to close cooperative relations with Pakistan, which is playing a pivotal role in fighting militants along the restive Afghan border.
Foregin Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, chairman Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly, Asfand Yar Wali and Pakistan?s Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani assisted the President at the meeting.
Halbrooke assured that ?the United States will not let down the Pakistani people? and stand by them in overcoming the economic and security challenges, sources privy to the talks said.
According to the sources, the two delegations discussed the prospects of Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) first summit which will be co-chaired by the leaders of the two countries on margins of the UN General Assembly session.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?s forthcoming visit to Pakistan also came under discussion during the meeting, sources added.
A whole range of issues between Pakistan and United States were also deliberated upon with focus on the economic cooperation.
Holbrooke, Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, was accompanied by senior State Department officials.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defence Secrtetary Robert Gates are also expected to meet President Zardari during his stay in New York, where he is heading the Pakistani delegation to the UN General Assembly session.
President Asif Ali Zardari and US President Barack Obama will also meet, when they will co-chair the first FoDP Summit along with British Premier Gordon Brown on September 24.
