BANGALORE: Former Australian cricket skipper Steve Waugh has said though Twenty20 cricket is exciting it can never undermine the essence of test cricket.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Steve Waugh says, ?T20 format is exiting. Young kids want to play it, it gives them opportunities to maybe have a job later on.
Lot of kids are making a living out of it, it is exciting for the spectators, people who market the game are fantastic, sponsors really like it?as long as we make sure we protect test cricket and also the 50 overs game.?
?I do not think test cricket will die, it is very essence of the game and T20 need test cricketers that is where the stars get produced. As a cricketer you want to test your skills in the maximum possible way and that?s have a five days of tough cricket,? he added.
Waugh said Australia had proved its dominance winning the Champions Trophy, but with all-round cricketing season it was difficult for any team to dominate the game throughout various formats.
?Australia dominated the series but they probably lost big moments. Australia did very well in the short forms, winning the last four World Cups, two ICC mini-World Cups?, test matches, but I do not think any side dominates cricket like the West Indies in the 80?s and probably we did in the 90?s,? Waugh said.
Shane Watson?s unbeaten century led Australia to a comfortable six-wicket win over New Zealand in the recently concluded Champions Trophy final in South Africa.
Australia retained the trophy they won for the first time in 2006.
