Zaheer raps Punjab govt for fleeing from by-polls

LAHORE: Opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Zaheer Friday said the Punjab government has insulted the voters by fleeing from by-elections.

The members of Punjab Assembly held an informal meeting at Opposition Chambers and mulled over the strategy regarding the assembly session starting from October 12. Also, the meeting decided to call meting of parliamentary party on the same date.

The meeting also condemned suicide car blast In Peshawar.

Chaudhry Zaheer said the sugar crisis has intensified in the province, adding on time crushing of the sugar cane is the responsibility of the Punjab government after it captured the stocks of sugar mills.

Names of 29 killed in Peshawar blast released

PESHAWAR: The administration Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) has released the list carrying names of 29 identified persons who were killed in today?s Peshawar blast while 20 others remained unidentified, Geo news reported Friday evening.

According to Dr. Sheraz Afridi, the in-charge causality ward of LRH, said women and children were also among killed persons. Following are the names;

Aamna, Atiqullah, Ayaz, Daod, Haleem Saeed, Iftikhar Ahsanullah, Irshad Khan, Ashfaq, Jaan Sher, Musa, Murad Ali, Nasir Ahmed, Raheel, Zubair Shah, Shoaib Niazi, Samiullah, Sarfaraz, Shakirullah, Shergul, Sher Muhammad Iqbal and Ziauddin.

Two Afghan nationals Aamna and Atiqullah were also among killed, sources said.

20 people could not be identified, he concluded.

France to make public dossier on Karachi bomb

KARACHI: French government has agreed on making the dossier on bomb blast outside a hotel at Club Road here seven years ago.

Fourteen people including 11 employees of French naval construction company were killed in the bomb blast of 2002 in Karachi.

Early this year, French judges expressed suspicion that the bomb blast rather than being result of terrorism, had more to do with kick back in defence agreement for purchase of submarines. Initially Al-Qaeda was blamed for the attack.

MQM cannot be threatened with arrests: Rizvi

LAHORE: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader and Deputy Parliamentary leader of the Party Haider Abbas Rizvi has said that MQM cannot be intimated with raids and arrests, adding, ?we are accustomed to this kind of situation.?

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Haider Abbas Rizvi asked Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to launch an inquiry into the incident of what he said the harassment of MQM worker Saif Yar Khan by Punjab police.

He said MQM cannot be stopped from initiating its political journey in Punjab.

QA Trophy matches shifted from Peshawar to R?pindi, Islamabad

PESHAWAR: Two round matches of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy have been shifted from Peshawar to Rawalpindi and Islamabad due to suicide explosion here on Friday.

Following the bomb blast in Peshawar, an emergency meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board?s domestic wing was held at the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.

This has been decided in the meeting to shift the first two round matches of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy from Peshawar.

Now the match scheduled to be played between Peshawar and Karachi Bears at Peshawar from tomorrow will be held at the KRL Stadium Rawalpindi from October 11 to 14 while the second round match between Peshawar and Quetta will be played from October 16 to 19 at the National Cricket Ground Islamabad.

KSE-100 Index recovers 28 points

KARACHI: Some recovery was witnessed at Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE), as the 100-Index gained 28 points to close at 9,769 on Friday.

Market opened positive on the last trading day of the week and at one point the major Index touched 9,924 level. But the deadly suicide blast in Peshawar led some of the investors to opt for off-loading their holdings. However, it left the Index 28 points up at the end of the session.

Bank Alfalah Limited remained today?s volume leader.

KSE-30 Index gained 35 points to finish the day at 10,381.

Sindh coalition parties stress strengthening ties

KARACHI: The coalition parties in Sindh government including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) underscored strengthening the mutual coordination in meeting of Karachi Coordination Committee.

PPP?s leader Rashid Rabbani, Najmi Alam and Waqar Mehdi, MQM?s leader Wasim Aftaab and Hammad Siddiqui and ANP?s Rana Gul Afridi and Bashir Jan attended the meeting held at Chief Minister House.

According to sources, the meeting decided to constitute the Coordination Committees at Town level in Karachi and it was said that these committees would be finalized in the meeting next Friday.

The meeting expressed satisfaction over law and order situation in Sindh including Karachi and it was stressed that these committees established in five districts should hold meetings regularly.

The meeting also decided to constitute coordination committees comprising the coalition parties in other districts.

The meeting condemned the Peshawar blast that killed at least 49 people.

Rs300 to Rs400 bln not received due to pending cases: FBR

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Sohail Ahmed on Friday said that out of 1.7 million National Tax Number (NTN) holders only 60 percent file their returns while 40 percent do not file.

“We have initially identified 13,000 NTM holders who filed their returns last year but did not pay taxes according to their expenditures or sources of income will be issued notices asking them to pay their due taxes to avoid actions,? he told media at an informal meeting here at FBR house today.

Newly appointed Spokesman and Member Direct Tax Policy of FBR, Asrar Raouf was also present on the occasion.

He added that the FBR would encourage them to correct their record and pay taxes according to their expenditures from resources otherwise their data will be checked from the “Data bank of the FBR” and the evaded amount would be recovered from them.

The Chairman FBR said that the government has facilitated the taxpayers and launched Universal Self Assessment Scheme (USAS) to file their returns honestly and according to their income and expenditures to the revenue department.

“If the taxpayers, despite this facility evade taxes than it is the right of the tax collecting authority to check the returns through audit whenever and wherever they felt necessary and find fault,” he remarked.

Reply to a question, Chairman FBR Sohail Ahmed said that this year the ratio e-filing was progressing well.

He said that in the year July 1, 2010 the Value Added Tax (VAT) would replace the General Sales Tax (GST).

Sohail Ahmed said that he as Chairman of FBR is enjoying full authority to run the organization adding his organization was also enjoying full autonomy.

He said those employees would be given monetary rewards who performed well and achieved their given revenue targets.

He was of the view that tax to GDP ratio could be enhanced provided the taxpayers should file their returns properly and pay their due taxes to the country.

He said that Taxpayers were paying their taxes because they knew that FBR was there to question them.

He expressed the hope that Data bank of the FBR would help identify more taxpayers who do not pay their due taxes to the government.

He said the payments worth Rs300 to Rs400 could not be received owing to the various cases being heard in courts regarding taxes.
