Turkish minister calls on President Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Turkish minister of state for science, technology and Information Prof. Mehmet Aydin called on President Asif Ali Zardari here at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Minster for commerce, Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister of State for Finance Economic Affairs and M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President. Turkish Ambassador in Islamabad Mr.Mustafa Babur Hezlan was also present.

The President welcomed the visiting minister and expressed the hope that Pak- Turkey Joint Ministerial Commission being held in Islamabad would prove instrumental in further boosting the level of economic cooperation between the two countries.

He said that the current level of trade of US$ 600 million between the two countries is far below the existing potential and stressed for early finalization of Preferential Trade Agreement to further enhance the level of trade and commercial ties between the two countries.

The President invited the Turkish investors to undertake joint venture projects in Infrastructure, housing and Construction, power, oil and gas and tourism sectors in Pakistan.

The government has offered incentive packages for investment in these sectors and the investors friendly environment has been created by providing foolproof security to the investors in all parts of the country.

The president said that Pakistan could also benefit from the Turkish experience of educational reforms as long term measure to reform militant mindset to defeat militancy.

The President said that Pakistan looked forward to the Turkish Prime Minister’’s forthcoming visit to Pakistan that would take the level of strategic cooperation between the two countries to new heights.

The President appreciated the support of Turkish government at the FODP meetings and the pledge of US$100 million, out of which $10million has already been transferred and hoped for early disbursement of the remaining amount.

The Turkish minister said that his country is keen to further strengthen the bilateral economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. He said there was great potential to raise the level of trade between the two countries to 2 billion dollars in the next few years. He assured continued support of his government in Pakistan?s fight against militants and the FODP initiative.

Attack on security forces foiled; 9 assailants killed

LAHORE: Security forces killed all the terrorists who tried to attack Elite Force Traning School, Manawan Police Training Center and FIA building in Lahore and successfully established full security control at all these places.

Banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility of the three attacks.

Nine terrorists were killed while thirteen security personnel and five civilians were martyred in a retaliatory action by the law enforcement agencies.

The three attacks were carried out in the duration of half-hour between 09:15 AM and 09:45 AM.

This morning, first terrorist attack was launched at FIA Building at Temple Road, where terrorists made their way into the premises by carrying out indiscriminate firing. Two FIA personnel, two policemen and as many citizens were martyred while a terrorist was also killed in retaliatory firing.

The terrorists first carried out blasts at Elite Force Training School at Bedian Road and a Police Training School in Manawan and then they opened indiscriminate fire after forcing their way into the building. Security forces gunned down two terrorists while three terrorists blew themselves up.

In Manawan, 8 security men and two citizens were martyred while three terrorists were killed.

According to GOC Maj. Gen. Shafat Ahmed, five terrorists were killed while one policeman and a citizen were killed in Bedian Elite Training Center.

All the bodies were shifted to dead house.

Emergency has been declared in all the hospitals where administration has been directed not to discharge any injured without security clearance.

Those martyred by terrorists? firing at the FIA building include Rana Farooq, Shehzad Younus, Inspector Riaz, Ikramul haq, Mubashshir Siddiq and Zaheer Afzal.

According to hospital sources, the deceased in Manawan attack are Salamat Ali (Instructor), Nasrullah Khan (Sub-Inspector), Talha (Constable), Muhammed Aslam (Inspector), Asif (Constable), Sher Muhammed (Inspector) and Zahid Ali Shah (Constable); while, a constable could not be identified.

Twenty-seven bodies have been brought to Meo, Gharki and Gangaram hospitals. Of the bodies taken to Meo and Gangaram hospitals, 13 are of security personnel, 5 of citizens while 8 bodies are of terrorists.

Younis wants to be captain till World Cup 2011

LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team captain Younis Khan called on Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt here today and both agreed on most of the matters.

Ijaz Butt held this meeting at his private office instead of the PCB Headquarters Gaddafi Stadium on the request of Younis Khan.

Sources said that it was a pleasant meeting which continued for one hour and both agreed on most of the matters.

Younis stressed on the board to appoint him captain for a longer period so that he can formulate a strong team for the World Cup 2011 and no undue interference be made in his job.

It is likely to be made a formal announcement from the PCB for withdrawing resignation by Younis Khan in a few days while its approval would be obtained in the meeting of the PCB governing board to be held on October 19 in Lahore.
