Arsenal crashes Liverpool 2-1

LONDON: A young Arsenal side Thursday night beat seven time League Cup Champions Liverpool 2-1 in an absorbing Carling Cup fourth round tie at the Emirates stadium.

Fran Merida thundered in an 18-yard shot to put Arsenal ahead early in the first half as Liverpool’’s Emiliano Insua equalized 6 minutes later with a superb 25-yard dipping strike.

Nickolas Bendtner shot into the roof of the net in the second half to secure Arsenals place in the last eight.

At the Stamford Bridge, Saloman Kalou gave the home side the lead, Florent Malouda scored the second, A low drive from Deco sealed the victory and a header from substitute Didier Drogba rounded it off in style.

The 4-0 score line serves as testimony to a strong, cohesive performance from what was largely Chelsea’’s second string team.

In another tie of the night Manchester City cruised to a 5-1 victory over championship side Scunthorpe. In the mid week Serie A tie Juventus made it two wins on the bounce with a thumping 5-1 win over Sampdoria at the Stadio Olimpico.

Amauri ,Giorgio Chiellini, Mauro Camoranesi and substitute David Trezeguet scored the goals as Juventus produced their best performance of the season to leapfrog Sampdoria, for whom Giampaolo Pazzini grabbed a consolation, into second place.

And in tennis, Serena Williams will finish the year as world number one after Dinara Safina withdrew due to a back injury from the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha.

The Wimbledon champion Williams later won her second match of the tournament, defeating her older sister Venus 5-7 6-4 7-6.

Serena only had to win one more match than Russia’’s Safina to overtake her in the rankings.

Passport of alleged 9/11 conspirator recovered

ISLAMABAD: Security forces have recovered a passport of German national, Saeed Bhaji, who allegedly chalked out the plot of 9/11 attacks.

According to sources, Saeed Bhaji was accused of carrying out 9/11 attacks.

The passport of Saeed Bhaji has an entry showing Karachi?s visit in the first week of September 2001. During the visit he informed Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan about the planned attacks.

Saeed Bhaji planned the US and Germany attacks in Afghanistan.

Recommendations to limit presidential powers to be tabled soon: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Federal minister for information, Qamar Zaman Kaira clarified on Thursday Nawaz Sharif?s recent meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari was not a result of any foreign pressure.

Kaira told Geo News reporter, Asif Ali Bhatti in an exclusive interview that the parliamentary committee on limiting presidential powers, headed by Raza Rabbani, has completed most of its work. The committee will present the report to the parliament within the next few weeks.

He said that the National Assembly?s standing committee, has forwarded recommendation for prohibiting media from live coverage of terrorist attacks.

Electricity generation shrinks by 50%

LAHORE: Thin water flow in Mangla and Tarbela dams is causing 50 percent declined at in hydal electricity generation, whereas the unavailability of furnace oil has forced closure of thermal power houses. As a result, 8 to 15 hour electricity outages persist.

The load shedding hours have not decreased in winters owing to significant decline in hydel and thermal electricity generation.

Currently, hydel electricity production stands at 3,000 MW and thermal electricity generation at 6,000 MW.

Punjab is bearing 8 to 15 hours of unannounced power outages to balance the energy deficit.

The sources stated that supply of 600 MW electricity per day is being ensured to Karachi despite all kinds of difficulties.

PEPCO has cut down furnace oil purchases due to its worsening financial condition. The energy crisis is feared to grow in the coming days.

KARACHI: Pakistan’’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves stood at $14,428.9 million on October 24, 2009, State Bank of Pakistan said Thursday.
