Three hurt in Quetta grenade attack

QUETTA: At least three persons sustained injuries as unknown miscreants launched grenade attack on a police officer home located on Manojan Road here in Quetta on Tuesday, Geo news reported.

According to police sources, the injured persons were identified as constable Muhammad Asif, his nephew Abid Hussain and his sister.

Injured were shifted to Civil hospital for medical attainment but constable Muhammad Asif was said to be critical in condition, hospital sources said.

Police said they have lodged cases against unnamed miscreants.

Million rupees cotton torched in Karachi inferno

KARACHI: The fire, erupted in cotton warehouses, found in Moch Goath locality, has been brought under control following four hours long rescue efforts but however, cotton worth of million rupees, was burnt to aches due to congested streets and lack of water, where firefighters had to undergo hard times to perform their duties, Geo news reported.

According to eyewitnesses, fire broke out suddenly on cotton warehouse, which engulfed million rupees cotton in no time however, fire brigade crew brought fire under control after four hours continuous fire extinguishing efforts.

As many as 9 fire tenders and two jumbo water tankers participated in rescue efforts and succeeded to tame fierce fire blazes within four hours but however, no causality was reported during the incident, sources said.

The cotton, deposited in warehouse, was meant for export to foreign countries and was worth of millions of rupees, sources privy to cotton warehouse maintenance section revealed.

Investment in national saving schemes up by 172pc

ISLAMABAD: During the first four months of current fiscal year, investment in national saving schemes has been increased up to 172 percent.

Overall investment during this period remained Rs 88.51 billion. A local news channel while quoting BMA Capital reported that in October, Rs 25.60 billion invested in national saving schemes while this volume remained Rs 6.89 billion during September.

NSS is an important source to provide liquidity to banks. Due to which capital becomes easily available to banks to provide loans. The government has fixed the target of Rs 240 billion investment in saving schemes.

FBI sending team to Pakistan in terror probe

ISLAMABAD: The FBI is sending a team to Pakistan as part of an investigation into links with a Chicago terror suspect, the U.S. Embassy said Tuesday.

The announcement came a day after the probe expanded to include a retired Pakistani army officer ? highlighting long-held fears of Pakistan’’s central role in global extremism.

David Coleman Headley, an American of Pakistani descent, was arrested in Chicago in October and accused of planning an attack on a Danish newspaper after it committed blasphemy.

On Monday, he also was accused of conducting extensive surveillance on potential targets in the Indian city of Mumbai before the terrorist attacks there in November 2008 that left 166 people dead.

The U.S. alleged charges said Headley, who changed his name from Daood Gilani, had attended militant training camps in Pakistan and conspired with members of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba to launch terrorist attacks in India.

Military success in Swat, SWA unnerves terrorists: Malik

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Tuesday that the success of the military operation in Swat and South Waziristan had unnerved the terrorists who were carrying out desperate attacks to shake the resolve of security forces and the government.

?But the government and security forces are determined to eliminate the terrorists and militants. The desperate attempts by the terrorists cannot shake our resolve,? he told newsmen at the Parliament House.

To a question, he said there was involvement of foreign hands in the terrorist attacks in the country and the government would reveal it at an appropriate time. He regretted that the Indian attitude of avoiding resumption of the composite dialogue process despite repeated calls by Pakistan for return to the negotiating table.

To another question, he said explosive scanners and detectors had been imported from China. A special C-130 flight would soon be sent to China for bringing the mobile scanners and detectors. He said the scanners would be installed in the federal capital. To a question about his future as interior minister, he said this would be decided by the PPP.
