NRO was must for transition to democracy: Fahim

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim has said that the promulgation of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was imperative for restoring democracy and smooth transition from military dictatorship to a democratic setup.

In an Interview with media, he said, the elections of February 2008 could not be called as credible and complete without the participation of two main leaders - chief of PML-N Mian Nawaz Sharif and PPP?s leader Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

The NRO made possible the re-entry of political stalwarts of PML-N and PPP in country?s political arena and helped in making elections as credible and authentic, he said.

The main thing before political leadership was to restore democracy as General retired Musharraf was not ready to even allow the entry of Nawaz Sharif,Shahbaz Sharif and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in the country.

Outrightly rejecting that the NRO benefited Pervez Musharraf, he said that NRO did not consolidate the position of Musharraf as he was forced to resign from his coveted office later on.

Indeed, the NRO was a give and take formula as the main thing behind PPP?s visionary leadership was to make possible the safe return of exiled leaders as well as restoration of democracy in the country.
