Salman, Rehan fined for misconduct

KARACHI: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has fined senior Olympians Rehan Butt and Salman Akbar for breach of discipline during Champions Challenge Hockey Cup in Argentine.

On the other hand, the national heroes were seen making photographs with some local girls in the presence of team?s officials.

Sources told Geo that Rehan Butt and Salman Akbar came late to their rooms after defeating India during the four-nation hockey tournament. As a result, the team management imposed fines of Rs25, 000 and Rs50, 000 on the players.

However, the PHF has not confirmed the incident.

The PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa said these photographers were taken at a dinner in the airport. One of the two women, who were seen in the photos, was team?s contact officer while the other woman was friend of her, he clarified.

French defence chief meets President Zardari

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday said, as the monster of militants and extremists was created by the international community in the past to fight the rival ideology, it was their responsibility to help Pakistan in this fight and contain its negative fallout on the country.

He said that non-state actors wanted to push sovereign countries to go to war. To guard against it, the international community needs to join hands, he said.

The President was talking to General Jean-Louis Georgelin, Chief of Defence Staff French Armed Forces, who called on him here at Aiwan-e-Sadr today.

During the meeting matters relating to militancy and defence cooperation between Pakistan and France came under discussion.

The President said that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with France and stressed on comprehensive up-gradation of bilateral ties with enhanced trade, investments, sustainable market access and deeper mutual cooperation in other areas that could prove beneficial for both the countries.

The French Chief of Defence Staff appreciated Pakistan?s role in the fight against militancy and the sacrifices of the armed forces and law enforcing agencies.

Minister for Defence Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Tariq Majeed, Secretary General to the President Salman Faruqui, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and Spokesperson to the President former Senator Farhatullah Babar also attended the meeting along with senior officials of both the countries.

French Ambassador Daniel Jouanneau was also present in the meeting.
President Zardari on the occasion also conferred Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) on General Jean-Louis Georgelin.

The citation read during the conferment ceremony said that ?in recognition of his valuable contributions in promoting mutual understanding and goodwill between the armed forces of the two countries, the President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari is pleased to confer the award of Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) upon General Jean-Louis Georgelin Chief of Defence Staff French Armed Forces?.

Ex-postmaster jailed for 5 years

RAWALPINDI: A former postmaster of Pakistan Post has been jailed for 5 years by the accountability court in Rawalpindi while a fine of Rs1 million is imposed on him.

According to the NAB, Khalid Masood was accused of misusing his position by opening fake accounts of his relatives and causing damage to national assets.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed a reference in the accountability court, on which court has sentenced 5 years jail to Khalid Masood and imposed fine of Rs1 million. However, failing to pay the fine will lead to 1 additional year in jail.
