Courts give judgments on merit: CJ

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that the apex court always gives its verdict according to the constitution.

However, one party welcomes it, while the other party feels sad and says judge could not understand the case.

The CJP expressed this at a meeting in Supreme Court (SC) with office barriers of Rawalpindi Divison?s bar associations.

He said SC decisions are the assets of public. He further said if courts verdicts are against anyone, they should accept the decision with open heart and this is called the rule of the law.

?Everybody is equal according to the Article 4 of the constitution, and we cannot give favor to anyone,? he asserted adding, ?Our survival lies in the supremacy of the constitution.?

The CJP further said positive impacts of National Judicial Policy have been witnessed.

Govt started confrontation with media, judiciary: Shujaat

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain Wednesday said the PPP government has started a confrontation with media and judiciary.

Speaking at the PML-Q?s CEC meeting here, he said those who are threatening the media should know that we fully stand by the free media.

?If the government runs the affairs of government in line with the principles of Quaid-e-Azam, it will have no need of any new agenda,? he opined.

Hussain claimed that he and Mushahid Hussain had rejected the NRO after reading its final draft. ?I am thankful to Almighty Allah that we have no connection with the NRO,? he said.

The meeting expressed complete support for the Supreme Court?s judgment on NRO and condemned the Peshawar suicide blast, curbs on media, terrorism, unemployment and soaring prices.

PM changes portfolios of 2 state ministers

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani today changed the portfolios of two state ministers and transferred four federal secretaries.

According to an official statement, Prime Minister Gilani has appointed Mehreen Anwar Raja as minister of state for law justice and parliamentary affairs. Afzal Sindhu has been made the minister of state for Railways, it said.

The statement further said that on the directive of Prime Minister Gilani, Justice (retd.) Aaqil Mirza has been appointed as Secretary Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in place of Justice (retd.) Riaz Kayani, who has been made Secretary Human Rights Division.

Muhammad Farid Khan has been made Chairman Pakistan Science Foundation while Secretary Parliamentary Affairs Hifzur Rehman has been appointed as Secretary Tourism Division.

IMF approves $1.2 billion Pakistan loan

DUBAI: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the fourth tranche of US$1.2 billion for Pakistan.

It is important to mention here that IMF conveyed its satisfaction over the use of the funds.

The fourth tranche was approved in the third meeting of IMF Executive Board.

Country?s integrity being put at stake over non-issues: Shah

KARACHI: Federal Minister Khurshid Shah Wednesday said that some elements were playing havoc with the country?s integrity by creating issues out of NRO-like non-issues.

He was speaking at a seminar hosted by the Employees Federation of Pakistan in Karachi.

Shah said some elements were engaged in causing harm to the democratic set-up because this Parliament had done quite a remarkable job in this short period. The Swat operation and NFC Award are some of its significant achievements, he said.

Terming the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) as non-issue, the minister said such issues have become part of the history.

SC issues detailed judgment in CJ restoration case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan today issued the detailed judgment of its July 20, 2007 decision about the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Having signatures of 10 judges, the 196-page detailed judgment has been written by Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday.
