Govt should have removed NRO beneficiaries: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Mian Nawaz Sharif says that the government should have demanded resignations from the NRO beneficiaries in advance.

Speaking to newsmen after chairing the party?s meeting here on Saturday, he said the democracy is facing a threat from undemocratic steps. ?I am doing my job and the government should also play its role, he said, adding that democracy doesn?t mean granting amnesty to corruption.?

He said those, who had got their loans written off, were still living in palaces and had become more affluent than before.

Welcoming the Supreme Court?s decision on NRO, the former premier said that the verdict should be implemented in letter and spirit. Sharif said that the government had not fulfilled the pledges it had made about 17th Amendment and Charter of Democracy (CoD).

?Any party alone can not resolve the challenges facing the nation. The whole nation, the parliament and politicians will have to work jointly to steering the country out of crises,? said Nawaz.

Earlier, addressing the party?s meeting, he said it would have been better if the government had struck down the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) itself. Someone else had to do this job too like the judges? restoration, he noted.

The PML-N chief said that those, who plundered the national exchequer and then ran away from the country, would face the consequences soon.

?We will now extend our cooperation to PPP on the basis of principles,? he said.

The former premier said the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto is the darkest chapter of the country?s history.
