Govt failed to implement CoD in 2009: Iqbal

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N spokesman Ahsan Iqbal has said that N-league has set its sights on the abolition of 17th Amendment in year 2010 for which a decisive struggle will be launched.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, Iqbal said that the PML-N would launch a public contact campaign if need arose.

About Karachi catastrophe, he called for a judicial probe into the gory incidents.

The government wasted year 2009 as it failed to implement the Charter of Democracy (CoD) signed by Pakistan Muslim-League-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He, however, hoped that the government would abide by its promises in 2010.

About Zardari?s statement on political weapons, he said that only people trust and good governance can be termed people weapons. ?Our mission is to set up an independent accountability commission so that the looted money could be brought back to the country.?

The PML-N leader said his party would host a historic convention in March this year in which party chief Nawaz Sharif would make important announcements. To a question, he said that the PML-N would conduct local bodies election in Punjab.

He urged the government to improve its governance instead of criticizing a particular media group.

MCB?s contract for acquiring RBS stands scrapped

KARACHI: The contract under which Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) was to acquire majority stake with administrative control in Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has been scrapped as it failed to get regulatory approval.

Spokesman of MCB told Geo News that under the agreement MCB was to acquire 99.37 percent shares of RBS by December 31. However, the acquisition failed to get approval from Pakistani regulator in the stipulated time and as a result the contract now stands scrapped.

Altaf denounces Laki Marwat bombing

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has strongly condemned the Laki Marwat blast in which more than 40 people were killed and many other wounded.

In a statement issued from London, Hussain expressed grief and shock over loss of innocent lives.

The blast suggests that terrorists want to directly target the people so that country?s situation could further worsen, he said.

The MQM chief demanded President, Prime Minister and Interior Minister of taking strict notice of the blast.

He also condoled with the aggrieved families.

SBP protects banking cartels? interests: Rabbani

KARACHI: Leader of Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) Senator Raza Rabbani said Friday instead of giving trade unions its legal rights, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is protecting the interests of banking cartels.

According to a statement issued here, Rabbani said this while meeting the leaders of various trade unions of banking industry.

The meeting discussed the progress made on Private Member Bill presented by Raza Rabbani to slash the section 27/b of Banking Companies Ordinance 1962.

Rabbani said abolition of section 27b was a promise of Benazir Bhutto to the workers of banking sector.

He said Finance Ministry, Law Ministry and Ministry of Labour have a consensus on the elimination of section 27b, however, the SBP doest not want trade unions to get its legal rights. He further said the SBP is protecting the interests of banking cartels.

Delay in railway departures

KARACHI: The passengers traveling to upcountry stations are facing difficulties at Cantt Station Karachi due to 3 to 4 hours delay in departures of the trains.

Passengers told Geo News that information office of Cantt Station was not responding to their queries and staff present at the office was not telling the correct timing of trains? departure.

On the other hand, Divisional Commercial Officer of Pakistan Railway Kashif Yusfani said trains left on time and rejected the talks about any delay.

PM to continue making military appointments: Zardari

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the appointment of Naval and Air chiefs was done by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on merit.

In an interview with a private TV channel, he said there is no possibility of any confrontation among the state institutions, adding every institution should work within its constitutional parameters.

To a question, he said that a correct opposition, not strong opposition, was necessary in democracy. Yousuf Raza Gilani is braded as the exemplary Prime Minister, he said.

The president said that the Prime Minister would continue to make military appointments on merit. He said that the better government could compromise its popularity but could not do any damage to the country.

?As the party?s co-chairman, I am accountable to the Parliament too,? he said, adding we will contest next polls in line with the vision of Benazir Bhutto.?

He said that his party had not weakened the N-league in Punjab but the ministers belonging to PML-N had done so by tendering resignations.
