Baffled terrorists targeting public: Iftikhar

PESHAWAR: NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain has said that we will have to target the militants? training facilities and hideouts across the country to get rid of militancy from the country.

Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Center for Research and Security Studies on the issue of ?Freedom of Information? at Peshawar Press Club, he said that Shah Hassankhel terror attack was a reaction to the operation launched by peace lashkar, who had flushed out terrorists from the area.

He said the terrorists, bewildered by operation, were now targeting general public.

The minister was of the view that it was necessary for the elimination of terrorists that we will have to go after them in all parts of the country.

He said unscheduled power cuts would not be tolerated at all because electricity was being generated in NWFP.

10 people killed in Hunza landslide; fear of floods looms

GILGIT: Ten people were killed as landslide destroyed a number of houses located on a hillside in Attabad village by Hunza River here on Monday.

The debris of the houses fell in Hunza River, blocking its flow of water and raising fears of flooding of the low-lying areas across the river.

Deputy Commissioner of Gilgit, Asad Zamin has directed the people living in low-lying areas to shift to safer places.

As many as 26 houses were devastated by the landslide that occurred at 2:00 PM on Monday.

According to hospital sources bodies of 10 people were brought to the facility.

Their debris came sliding down into the Hunza River completely obstructing the flowing water. Help of Chinese engineers and local laborers has been sought to restore the flow of the river.

The District Administration has closed a portion of Shahra-e-Karakorum between Hunza and Swat for all types the traffic and declared emergency in Hunza.

Director General Disaster Manatgement Authority Gilgt-Baltistan, Usman Younis said the rescue and relief activities are being carried out with the help of local volunteers.

Deputy Commissioner Gilgit, Asad Zamin has said that the blockage of river flow has triggered fear of flooding and directed the people living in low-lying areas to move to safer locations.

Village Attabad has 100 houses located on a hillside in Sarat area of Hunza Tehsil. Many of these houses had cracked as a result of similar landslide 3 years ago.

Five terrorists killed in Op Rah-e-Nijat

WANA: Five terrorists have been killed and 7 others injured in the ongoing operation Rah-e-Nijat during the last 24 hours.

According to ISPR, on Jandola Sector, security forces carried out sanitization in area around Shuza Nullah.

On Shakai Sector, terrorists fired few rockets at security forces check post near Boya Narai which was effectively responded.

Security forces conducted search and clearance in Jamal Shah near Pash Ziarat and Mankal Algad on Razmak Sector and cleared 34 compounds. During encounter, 5 terrorists were killed and 7 were reportedly injured, while cache of arms and ammunitions were also recovered.

Two terrorists were apprehended near Shewa check post.

In Operation Rah-e-Rast in Swat-Malakand, Security forces conducted search and clearance operation at Meramai near Chuprial, Pia Nimakai, Tando Dag, Shahbazabad near Katlang, Delai and Mora Sar check post and apprehended 5 suspected terrorists and recovered cache of arms and ammunition.

Five suspects voluntarily surrendered themselves to security forces at Shagai, Sakhra, Watakai and Dagar.

Amendments in Judicial Policy for achieving goals

ISLAMABAD: Registrar Supreme Court of Pakistan, Dr. Faqeer Hussain has said that a few amendments have been in the judicial policy for achieving desired goals.

Addressing a press conference here at a hotel, the Registrar said the objectives of making amendments in the Judicial Policy are: independence of judiciary, elimination of corruption and restoration of people?s confidence in the justice system.

He said the higher judiciary is receiving complaints of corruption in the lower courts. Quick action is being taken against these complaints, he added.

Mushahid advises govt to avoid row with media, judiciary

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Syed has urged the government to stop confronting media and judiciary, which played a vital role for the cause of democracy.

Speaking to media persons in the federal capital today, he dispelled the impression that there was any threat to the government or democracy.

?The people of Karachi deserve salute for thwarting a plot aimed at starting sectarian and ethnic divide in the city,? said Mushahid.

He said the 25 percent of the country?s revenue was being collected from the arson-hit Boulton Market and termed it an assault on the country?s economy.

To a question, Syed said that he would support Altaf Hussain?s statement for framing an effective and comprehensive strategy against terrorism.

He urged the government to take up this issue at the United Nations Security Council.

Swat courts resume hearing after 2 years

SWAT: Following the restoration of peace in Swat, the local courts have resumed formal hearing after a span of two years and two months.

In addition to civil administration, the courts have also started its work in Matta tehsil of Swat, where four Qazis and additional session judges heard the cases.

It may be reminded here that the courts were closed in Swat amid tense security situation in Swat on Oct 2007.

More than 55 cases were open for hearing in the courts today.

Welcomed the reopening of the courts, people hoped that they would get immediate justice.
