Perpetrators of Ashura blast identified: police

KARACHI: Culprits responsible for the bomb blast at the Karachi?s main Ashura procession have been identified, CCPO Karachi Wasim Ahmed told Geo on Tuesday.

Speaking to Geo News, the CCPO disclosed that police was now aware how the Ashura blast was planned. ?We are also aware who wants to disturb peace of Karachi city,? he said.

Ahmed said he was aware of the perpetrators of Ashura blast and other leads in this regard. He further said a similar attempt to carry out another terrorist attack in Karachi was thwarted by the police on 1st January.

?We have successfully safeguarded the city for two years, he said, adding he can not share these information according to some compulsion,? said Ahmed.

Political confrontation will end democracy: Badar

LAHORE: Pakistan People?s Party (PPP)?s Secretary General Jahangir Badar has said that rift among political parties is against the national interest and this will end the democracy.

He was addressing a gathering arranged for the 82nd birth anniversary of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto here on Tuesday.

Badar said PPP was targeted in the name of accountability, however, the party does not believe in victimization.

He further said he is with President Zardari inline with the political philosophy of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

He said Pakistan has not seen leaders like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

Farooq terms Taseer mentally challenged person

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Sadiq al-Farooq, terming Punjab Governor Salman Taseer a mentally challenged person, demanded the government to set up a medical board for his medical examination.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, he said that Pakistan was moving ahead toward the completion of democracy and for this it was necessary for all political parties to reach a consensus on key national issues.

Farooq was of the view that Taseer?s statements were disturbing the political atmosphere for which the government should take notice.

To a question, he said that PML-N had never made any demand for the mid-term polls. He said the government should reopen Swiss cases against President Zardari.

CNG stations to remain closed in Punjab, NWFP for 14 hours

LAHORE: The Sui Northern Gas Company has decided to keep the CNG stations of Punjab and NWFP closed from 6am to 8pm daily.

The announcement is set to affect the 2480 CNG stations of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gunjranwla, Sheikhupura, Bahalpur and other cities of Punjab and NWFP.

According to SNGC spokesman, the decision has been made due to low gas pressure.

Tarin to attend ADB?s conference

ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Shaukar Tarin will attend the meeting of Asian Development Bank (ADB) going to be held on 14 and 15 January.

The ADB has organized a two-day conference in Philippines?s capital Manila. It may be noted that finance ministers from nine Asia-Pacific countries will take part in the conference while governors of seven central banks are also expected to attend the meeting.

The conference will review the consequences of global economic recession.

PM Gilani says political leadership is united

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that there is a need to reconsider the measures being taken by the country?s law enforcement agencies against terrorism.

He said the capabilities of Pak Army and commitment of the public and political leadership for country?s defence, integrity and sovereignty should not be undermined.

Cabinet Ministers, members of the Committee, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Services Chiefs, attended the Defence Committee meeting at the Prime Minister House. The meeting was headed by the PM.

Addressing the meeting, Gilani said the nation was united in its resolve to counter-terrorism and stood fully behind the armed forces and law enforcement agencies in combating terror and for the sacred defence of the motherland.

?Country?s political leadership is united,? he added.

The PM expressed satisfaction on the anti-terrorism and law enforcement actions taken by the security forces in Tribal areas, Swat and Malakand.

He said Pakistan has secured more success than the combined achievements of allied forces in Afghanistan during the last 9 years.
