ISLAMABAD: Mainly dry and cold weather is expected in most parts of the country. However, foggy conditions will likely to continue in plain areas of Punjab.

According to the Met Office, lowest minimum temperature (-8 C) was recorded in Gopis and Astor.

17th Amendment issue to end in first quarter: Babar

PESHAWAR: Federal Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan has said main issues of 17th Amendment, 58 2b and provincial autonomy will be solved in the first quarter of the New Year.

He was talking to media at the birthday ceremony of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto at the residence of Speaker NWFP Assembly Karamatullah Chugmiti.

Babar said nation would hear good news in the first quarter of the New Year.

He further said political issues like 17th Amendment, 58 2b and provincial autonomy will be solved.

Federal Minister said after 19 years, NFC issue was settled under the Pakistan People?s Party (PPP)?s government and provinces got financial benefits.

Commenting on renaming the NWFP, he said there is no place for ?no? in democracy.

He said in democracy, all issues are resolved with a ?yes? and he believes the renaming issue will be settled with consensus.

Condemning the suicide attack on Peshawar Press Club, he said journalists who laid their life for the war on terror are national heroes.

Pak rupee at new record low

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee was traded at a new record low in inter-bank market on Tuesday as it was quoted closing at 84.73/ to the dollar.

Money market dealers said rupee value is gradually going down on transferring the payment of oil to commercial banks.

Dollar gained Rs0.16 in the inter-bank market to make a new high of 84.73 at closing.

Market dealers said banks released payment worth $100 million for crude oil yesterday while $80 million were paid today in this regard, which resulted in the record low value of rupee.

On the other hand, US dollar selling was quoted at 84.75 in open market while purchasing value remained 84.45, Exchange Companies Association reported.

Munawar urges Kamal to stop calling names, resign

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Syed Munawar Hasan has said that Karachi blast and arson are the negligence of state actors or they were themselves part of this conspiracy.

Speaking to media after visiting the arson-hit Boulton Market here on Tuesday, he said that Karachi nazim should tender his resignation instead of calling names to politicians and citizens.

Hasan said that federal, provincial and local state actors had pushed the city toward bloodshed and fire on Yaum-e-Ashur. He said that the announcement of Rs3.50 billion for compensation of affected traders was not enough and called for significant raise.

Nawaz vows to foil plot against democracy

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif said Tuesday that his party would foil every plot aimed at destabilizing democracy in the country.

Addressing a news conference after chairing the meeting of the party?s Organizing Committee here, Nawaz Sharif said there was no conspiracy against President Asif Ali Zardari, but added the PML-N would resist any such move even before the government.

He, however, cautioned that undemocratic attitude of the rulers could pose threat to the democracy. The former premier said those talking about the conspiracy against democracy are in the government. They should take actions against such elements, said Nawaz.

The former premier urged President Zardari to explain whom he was facing threat.

?We need to learn a lesson from the past, he said, adding survival of both PML-N and PPP is in the best interest of democracy.?

To a question, he clarified that the repeal of 17th Amendment was not meant for becoming prime minister for the third time.
