Personal attacks can jeopardize democracy: Badar

LAHORE: PPP Secretary General Jehangir Badar called on political leaders to avoid personal attacks on each other, fearing it could jeopardize the democracy.

Speaking at a ceremony in Lahore, he welcomed Nawaz Sharif?s statements regarding strengthening of democracy.

Badar said personal attacks could turn the relations into a war and feared that struggle for power could take us to a point of no return.

?PPP respects all state institutions, he said, adding we appeared before the courts in the past also and would continue to do so in future.?

Enemies wanted to incite sectarian riots in Muharram: Kaira

GUJRAT: Federal Information Minister Kamar Zaman Kaira said Wednesday that anti-Pakistan forces wanted to incite sectarian riots during holy month of Muharram. However, all the stakeholders jointly thwarted this conspiracy.

Speaking at a ceremony in Gujrat Police Line, he said that no compromise should be made in restoring the law and order as doing so could strengthen the adversaries and weakened the government.

Kaira said that only few controversial clauses of the 17th Amendments would be set aside. The federal minister said that there was no threat to government or democracy.

Mian Nawaz Sharif should include Ahsan Iqbal in the Constitutional Committee as he has many objections with the PPP, he said.

Tarin to attend ADB?s conference

ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Shaukar Tarin will attend the meeting of Asian Development Bank (ADB) going to be held on 14 and 15 January.

The ADB has organized a two-day conference in Philippines?s capital Manila. It may be noted that finance ministers from nine Asia-Pacific countries will take part in the conference while governors of seven central banks are also expected to attend the meeting.

The conference will review the consequences of global economic recession.

Part of torched building collapses in Karachi; 2 feared buried

KARACHI: The rear portion of the gutted Mashallah Market located at M.A. Jinnah Road has collapsed where two persons are feared to have been buried under its debris.

The above building was burned down following Ashura blast in Karachi.

According to Geo News, the building was declared dangerous after it was gutted by the fire on Ashura day.

Laborers were busy working inside the building when its rear portion came down. Eye witnesses say the number of people buried under the debris could be up to 8.

Rescue efforts are underway at the building?s site. However, difficulty is being faced in bringing in heavy machinery due to narrow allies.

PPP not be taught Constitution it gave: Riaz

LAHORE: Punjab senior minister Raza Riaz has said that Pakistan Peoples Party, which gave country the 1973 Constitution, should not be taught the lesson of its implementation.

Speaking to media at a ceremony organized to mark the birth anniversary of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in Lahore, he said that Presidency and Premiership were not given to PPP in charity.

The PPP sacrificed its leadership for the cause of democracy, he said, adding that it was the responsibility of PPP to safeguard the Constitution.
