ANP wants legislation to deweaponise Karachi

KARACHI: Awami National Party (ANP), Sindh, chief Shahi Syed, urged the need to introduce new laws to cleanse the city of weapons.

Addressing the news conference at Bacha Khan Markaz here on Sunday, he said law and order situation will not improve unless ?we make efforts for a weapon-free society?.

He said his party welcomes the enhancement of Rangers power in Karachi.

Syed suggested that the government should launch a door-to-door search operation for recovery of illegal weapons.

He suggested that the Sindh Assembly should pass a law, awarding five to 10 years imprisonment for keeping illegal arms. He said the city situation is not good and illegal weapons are being used in target killings.

The ANP leader offered that his party was ready to surrender all weapons, even licenced weapons, urging all the political forces to support this move.

Existing power crisis to end by Jan 31: Ashraf

GOJAR KHAN: Water and Power Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf said Sunday that the ongoing electricity crisis would end by January 31, 2010.

Addressing the public gathering at Gojar Khan, he said that President Asif Ali Zardari would soon surrender his powers to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

He said that a roadmap was being chalked out to end the electricity loadshedding. He, however, said that the investors had run away over needless criticism about the rental power plants.

The federal minister said that a section of media and some political parties were needlessly criticizing the government. However, it was not bothered at all.

Unrest being spread out from Lyari to other areas: MQM

KARACHI: Deputy Convener of Muttahida Qaumi Movement?s Coordination Committee, Dr. Farooq Sattar Sunday said attempts are being to spread ?Lyari like situation? in other parts of Karachi.

Dr. Sattar, flanked by other members of MQM Coordination Committee, was addressing a press conference here at MQM Headquarter here.

He condemned in strongest terms what he called ?cold-blooded murders? of MQM member Akhlaq Hasan and supporters Muhamamd Zeeshan and Mubin Shaikh.

?The violent activities at the hands of terrorists of Lyari gang under the patronage of the government is part of the ongoing conspiracy aimed at seizing Karachi,? Farooq Sattar alleged.

He said ?killings of MQM workers and Urdu speaking people? is being carried out through an organized conspiracy.

?Our patience and observance of restraint should not be misconstrued as our weakness,? he warned,? he said, adding, some of the leaders of Pakistan People?s Party along with the terrorists of Lyari gang war have been at work ?from generations? to trigger violence and give it a shade of ethnicity.

Dr. Farooq Sattar said, if required, MQM is ready to offer services of its volunteers to the law enforcing agencies for establishing peace in the city.

He demanded of the President and Prime Minister to take immediate notice of the incidents of what he said ?target killings of innocent MQM workers and Urdu speaking people?.
