ISLAMABAD: A spokesman of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Tuesday said that some media reports about the meeting of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry with Punjab?s Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were baseless.
The spokesman warned that strict action would be taken against those who were debating and making statements on the baseless report.
The statement issued by the Supreme Court spokesman said that an English daily The Nation had not only offered apology but also published a clarification in this regard. The paper also asked its reporter to give explanation on the issue, the statement said.
It further said that some elements were debating on this report to achieve their vested interests.
?The report is baseless and uncalled for and is an attempt to affect the reputation of the institution, it said, adding that those issuing any statement in this regard will have to face serious consequences.?
The statement further said that if anyone had any authentic information about the meeting, could present to the Registrar of the Supreme Court.

SYDNEY: Former Australian captain and leading commentator Ian Chappell has said that India are not capable of holding number one position in Test rankings and nor they can maintain it for a long period.
While talking with a web site, Chappell said that though India are currently placed at number one ranking but they have no capability to maintain this position.
He said that a team cannot become number one depending on batting only. An all round performance is necessary for this and it is not being seen in the Indian team.

PESHAWAR: The NWFP Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution against enhanced screening of Pakistani citizens at the US airports.
The opposition leader of NWFP Assembly Akram Khan Durrani tabled the resolution in which screening of Pakistani nationals was described as a violation of human rights.
Parliamentary leader of Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) Abdul Akbar Khan, PPP Sherpao group?s Sikandar Sherpao, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz?s Pir Sabar Shah, Awami National Party?s Saqib ullah Chamkni and Senior Minister Rahim Dad Khan supported the resolution.

KARACHI: For maintaining peace in Karachi, a committee has been formed comprising members of Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
This was decided in a meeting, headed by President Asif Ali Zardari, here at the Bilawal House. Members of the PPP and MQM attended the meeting.
Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad headed the MQM delegation while Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali shah led the PPP team.
President Zardari heard the views of both parties on the recent incidents of violence in Karachi.
Addressing the joint briefing, Sindh?s Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq said victims of current violence are the sons of Karachi and politics in their name is unfair.
Moreover, Provincial IT Minister Raza Haroon said the meeting agreed to eliminate terrorism from across the country including Karachi.
?The operation is not targeting any specific group, however, the operation will be against the criminals,? Raza added.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik was also present at the meeting while MQM?s chief Altaf Hussain joined the discussion on telephone.

RAWALPINDI: Major General Mubarak Salem Al Rada Al Mazrouei, UAE Land Forces Commander called on General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Army Staff at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi today.

HOBART: Pakistan is likely to make one or two changes in the team for the third and final test against Australia in Hobart.
Intikhab Alam, Pakistan coach, has expressed his complete satisfaction with the team?s bowling performance while batters? disappointing form is still a cause of serious concern for him.
He said young wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed would make his test debut in the Hobart test.
While Shoaib Malik could also be fielded in place of struggling middle order batsman Misbah-ul-Haq in the final eleven.
There is also a possibility of Kamran Akman playing as a specialist batsman. Fit-again Muhammad Amir is also likely to replace Muhammad Sami or Umar Gul.

ISLAMABAD: Senior leader of Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) Raza Rabbani, while staging a token walkout from the senate, said Lyari is the hub of PPP and operation only in Lyari is unacceptable.
He further said operation should be conducted all over the city against criminals. MQM and PPP are being used in the incidents of Karachi, he added.
It is important to mention here that senator Safdar Abbasi, Khalid Soomro, Jan Jamali, Ismail Baledi, Lashkari Raisani also participated in the walkout.
Commenting on the recent operation in Lyari, Rabbani said action should be taken against criminals across the city.
He lashed out at British Foreign Secretary David Miliband for making statement on Karachi incidents. Rabbani said that Miliband has no right to comment on our internal affairs.
He said peace is also connected to economy. Slogan of ?roti, kapra aur makaan? should be fulfilled practically.
He said the presence of foreigners and non-diplomatic elements remains a main problem, as we don?t even know who is living in our neighborhood.
Rabbani said weak institutions are also the reason of country?s prevailing problems, however, acting on Charter of Democracy can solve this problem.
