KARACHI: The 18th death anniversary of Mir-e-Sahafat Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman is being observed today (January 25).
Pakistan?s historic account of Urdu journalism is considered not even close to complete without the mention of Pakistan?s number 1 national daily ?Jang? and its founder Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman.
Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman?s name stands tall among the front-runners who placed Urdu newspapers and magazines on modern lines. Mir Sahab, without a doubt, qualifies to be called the ?Mir? of journalistic caravan of the country.
In 1940, when the heat of the world war II was also making its way from Europe to Asia, the Pakistan Movement was in its full swing following the adoption of Lahore Resolution. It was in this context that the newspaper, which took upon itself the task of spreading awareness about the world war besides fighting against the opponents of Pakistan Movement, was named ?Jang?.
The news content of Jang was reflective of the quest for an independent homeland and its columns and editorials painted the sketches of Pakistan?s map. They punished Mir Sahab for nurturing this quest and put him behind bars.
Immediately after independence, Pakistan witnessed aggressive property allotments as people made a beeline for filing claims. However, Mir Sahab abstained from demanding any return from the government of Pakistan against the services he rendered. He opened a single room office at Burns Road for running his newspaper, which made progress by leaps and bounds to become one day the Jang Group of Publications. With time, the Group expanded further as it saw publications of more newspapers in both Urdu and English languages.
All this success did not bring even a slightest change in the humility and humble attitude of Mir Sahab. His clean character, forthcoming personality and ever-smiling face kept on supplying energy to the spirits of the newspapers? staff.
Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman provided Urdu journalism a refreshing tone and tanner. He took profound interest in observing the modern technology related to journalism during his visits abroad and tried to adopt the same for his organization.
The plant that Mir Sahab sowed seven decades ago has now become a fully grown tree. The Jang Group has become a unique media organization not only in terms of publications but also as broadcasting network whose frequencies carry a world of news, a wide range of entertainment as well as sports arenas.
From the detention in the English imperialist regime to the shutting down of channels of Geo TV Network by a dictator, Jang Group had to pay a heavy cost for intrepid news reporting in its journey till this point.
It has been 18 years since Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman departed from this mortal world but the war he waged for the rights of the people continues unabated with the slogan of ?Geo Aur Jinay Do? (live and let live) for the cause of promoting democratic values.

MANSEHRA: Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has alleged that instead of providing relief to the people, the rulers have indulged in corruption.
Addressing a public gathering in Mansehra today, Elahi said his party will not tolerate any kind of rigging in by-poll in Mansehra and Swat districts.
The rulers have started a confrontation between state institutions, he said, adding the Punjab Government is fully involved in this game.
The Punjab government could win only two seats in Gilgit and Baltistan polls despite using state machinery while the PML-Q secured three seats.
Speaking on this occasion, PML-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Syed said both PML-N and PPP, who are coalition partners, have disappointed the people.
