Pakistan second group leaves for S Asian Games

KARACHI: The second group of the Pakistan squad has left here for Dhaka today to participate in the South Asian Games.

Federal minister for sports Mir Ejaz Hussain Jakhrani also accompanied the contingent which consists of 167 athletes of five games.

In all, an squad of 330 Pakistani players will participate in the South Asian Games and 192 players and officials have so far proceeded to Dhaka.

Players of basketball, kabaddi, judo, squash and shooting were included in the second group of the squad which left the Jinnah Terminal Karachi today (Thursday).

The contingent was accompanied by deputy chief de-mission Dr Waheed Mughal and federal minister for sports Jakhrani.

Pakistan will compete for winning gold medals in all events, except archery, in the South Asian Games which include 32 events.

The national players say that their main rival in the Games will be India and they will make all out efforts to outclass the Indians.

Players of handball, golf, boxing, swimming, table tennis, wrestling, athletics, karate, taikuwando and visho will reach Dhaka in various groups by February 4.

The inaugural ceremony of the Games will be held today in Dhaka and the games will continue upto February 8.

More than 2,000 athletes from eight countries will be seen in action in the SAsian Games.

PM seeks interpretation of Article 248

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday said that the government had never said it would not implement the decisions of the Supreme Court and that the President does enjoy immunity under Article 248.

Addressing the National Assembly here, the Premier asked the apex court to make interpretations on the matters which need spelling out and ?we will act on the court?s decisions in light of the law and Constitution.?

?I cannot scrap the immunity that has been granted to the President by the Constitution and law,? he clarified.

He pointed out that the former attorney general neither belonged to his party nor to the opposition. ?The former attorney general has filed a review petition challenging the Supreme Court?s verdict; how can I take action on this matter until the petition is with the court?? he questioned.

He said the judiciary has its own process for accountability while the leader of the opposition is ?good enough for our accountability?. The army has its way of court martial, but the Parliament cannot hold the judiciary accountable nor it can use the way of court martial because we cannot infringe on its domain.

The Prime Minister said we also want that our domain should also be respected in a similar fashion.

He said, ?why only a single case of President is discussed out of a long list of 8034 cases??

WANA: Four militants were killed in an action in South Waziristan as part of the ongoing Operation Rah-e-Nijat.

According to ISPR, On Jndola Sector, security forces conducted search and clearance operation and cleared area up to Ziaratzai near Ahmedwamand Tapar Punga near Nanu and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition.

On Shakai Sector security forces conducted search and clearance operation at Darakai, Tarakai, Khanzirai, Manzai and cleared number of compounds and cache of arms and ammunition were recovered.

ANP candidate wins Swat by-poll

SWAT: Rehmat Ali of the Awami National Party, according to unofficial result, won the by-election for the PF-83 constituency on Thursday by obtaining 6952 votes.

Jalat Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q was the runner-up with 3304 votes.

Strict action to continue against militants in FATA: Ghani

PESHAWAR: NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani Thursday reiterated the government’’s firm resolve to combat militancy in FATA, till complete restoration of its writ in these areas.

“Strict action against militants and terrorists will continue in FATA till such time the area is made fully secure and peaceful”, he said while presiding over the “Political Agents Conference” at Governor’’s House here.

All the Political Agents of the Tribal Agencies and DCOs governing FRs besides Additional Chief Secretary FATA Habibullah Khan, Secretary Law and Order FATA Tariq Hayat, Secretary AC FATA Abid Majeed and Secretary to Governor Sikandar Qayum attended the meeting.

Law and Order situation in tribal areas, efforts for restoration f Government’’s writ and new development strategy for FATA were thoroughly discussed.

The Political Agents and DCOs briefed the meeting about the situation in their respective Agencies and FRs.

The Governor expressed satisfaction that situation in tribal areas was improving and appreciated the efforts of the political administrations in this regard. He also lauded the sacrifices rendered by the personnel of law enforcement agencies as well as the cooperation and support extended by the tribesmen against anti-state and anti-social elements.

The Governor hoped that with the active cooperation and support from the people, the govt. would achieve more successes in FATA. Referring to the development initiatives, the Governor said that development was to be fully focused.

He in this regard made a mention of the new development strategy for FATA under which the tribesmen would be provided efficient and a modern facility in all social sectors particularly the education and healthcare.

The tribal areas, he added would be brought at par with other parts of the country with regard to provision of services.
