PM urges US to bridge trust deficit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan wants to maintain close and friendly relations with the United States and strengthen the strategic partnership in multidimensional sectors.

The Prime Minister was talking to Pakistan?s ambassador to Washington Hussain Haqqani, who called on him at the PM Secretariat here on Wednesday.

Gilani said the sentiments and expectations of Pakistani people need to be given due respect to help bridge the trust deficit and bring the people of both the countries closer.

Earlier, Haqqani briefed the prime minister on progress with regard to reimbursement of Coalition Support Fund, the visa issues and diplomatic/legal help extended to Dr. Aafia Siddiqui during her trial.

11 Khasadars among 17 die in Jamrud attack

KHYBER AGENCY: At least 17 people were killed, including 11 personnel of the paramilitary Khasadar force, and eight others wounded on Wednesday when a suicide blast struck a police patrol vehicle in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency.

Sources close to Khasadar forces told Geo that the suicide bomber below himself up near Khasadar mobile vehicle when it was passing through Wazir Dand area on Pak-Afghan Shahrah.

Eleven Khasadar personnel died and eight others sustained injuries in the attack. In addition, six passers-by were also killed.

A line officer was also among the martyrs.

The injured were shifted to hospitals of Peshawar. Following the blast, security forces cordoned off the area and initiated investigation into the incident.

Cabinet approves 3-year budgetary framework

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet which met here Wednesday with Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the chair decided to prepare medium term budgetary framework which leads to the budget of coming three years with an aim that the departments and the government should determine their directions.

Briefing the newsmen about the decision of the cabinet the Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the procedure of the budget would be changed. It would be presented before the month of May each year in National Assembly.

It would be reviewed by the National Assembly and Senate Committees to have a correct oversight of the budgets and the departments should make their priorities. He said this year tax to GDP ratio is 9.3 per cent and we have to increase it to 15 per cent by the year 2012-13.

Kaira said that now the reality figures would be announced in the budget in accordance modern international trend. He said war on terror has also affected our budget but Government is committed to take it to its logical end and for this purpose the grant for war on terror will also be increased to tackle militancy.

He said currently our budget deficit is 5.3 per cent and in 2012-13 we have to reduce it to the level of 2.3 per cent. He said the Cabinet approved indicative budget ceilings for recurrent and developmental budget. Indicative budget ceiling for current financial year includes Rs5827 billion under total broad recurrent budget heads.

Similarly, he said, Rs6226 billion, Rs6410 and Rs6666 billion are forecast in the same heads for the next three years.

To a question about the Pay and Pension Commission report, the Information Minister replied that it would be received by the next month and necessary revision would be brought in the pay and pensions of the employees.
