Naseem gets hero?s welcome on return

KARACHI: Naseem Hameed received a hero?s welcome on Thursday, as she became South Asia?s fastest woman by winning the 100-metre race in the South Asian Games played in Dhaka.

The 22-year-old clocked 11.81 seconds to clinch gold medal in the race in the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games Sunday, becoming Pakistan?s first female athlete to win the sprint in the competition?s 26-year history.

Naseem was accorded a warm reception by hundreds of jubilant fans and relatives at the Karachi airport and was then taken to a formal reception hosted by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad.

The governor lauded Naseem and announced a cash price of Rs5000, 000 for the feat.

She has also been awarded prizes of 500,000 rupees from sports ministry, 200,000 rupees from Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal and 100,000 rupees from the Pakistan Athletics Federation.

In an exclusive chat with Geo News, Naseem said: ?Allah blessed me with more than I had ever expected.?

?The prayers and encouragement of my parents brought her to this level,? the emotional Naseem said.

She said she would work with more determination and passion to win more laurels for the country. The athlete said she was glad to earn her country and her town Korangi a name.

Naseem further said she was elated by the reception.

In a message, President Asif Ali Zardari also congratulated Naseem Hameed and termed it a role model for Pakistani women.

Ex-Olympian hails Baloch boxers for securing medals

QUETTA: Former Olympian and three time gold-medalist in Asian Games Syed Abrar Hussain has praised the Baloshistan-based boxers for winning gold and silver medals at South Asian Games and termed it a positive development.

Talking with Geo News, Abrar Hussain said that all the boxers who won medals in the SAG deserve to be congratulated but the Pakistan boxing team should have won more medals.

He said that four boxers participated in the SAF Games 1984 and all of them won gold medals and in 1989, ten out of eleven boxers got gold medals.

Yousuf sees ?a player? behind team disunity

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Team Captain Muhammed Yousuf signaled the cause behind the bad performance of the team in the latest series with Australia, saying only one player is spoiling the atmosphere of the dressing room.

Talking to Geo Super in its program, the skipper said he had informed Coach Intikhab Alam about the same.

Yousuf said the team was united at the inception of the Australia tour; however later on, a player cause the disintegration in the team, adding he unfolded the situation to Team Manager Abdur Raqeeb and Coach Intikhab.

He said he would apprise Chairman Ijaz Butt of the situation.

Yousuf said he is not a natural captain; however, whatever he learned during his stint as captain in Australia tour, would come in handy for Pakistan.

The captain said he is okay to lead the team; however, if the board brings someone else for the position, he would not mind.
