LPG price cut by Rs 6 per kg

ISLAMABAD: The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has been cut by Rs six per kilogram, President Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) Distributors Association Irfan Khokar announced today.

Price of gas cylinder used domestically was reduced by Rs 71 while, commercially used cylinder price was reduced by Rs 283.

Load shedding: LHC seeks explanation from Pepco

LAHORE: Lahore High Court has sought explanation from the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Private) Limited (Pepco) for unannounced and unequal load shedding in rural and urban areas.

Barrister Farooq Hassan has filed the plea on behalf of his client Imtiaz Qureshi against Pepco for failing to announce load-shedding schedule for commercial and domestic consumers, which is against basic human rights, the petitioner pleaded.

Pepco, then provided the court load shedding schedule for commercial users. The court then, asked the official to present the schedule for domestic load shedding on next hearing and adjourned the hearing till 7th May.

Govt to act where its writ is challenged: Rehman

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik Monday said he would be able to react on court?s decision against Ajmal Kasab tomorrow when the detailed verdict is made public.

Talking to media men here outside Parliament House, Rehman Malik said he respects the Indian courts.

?I have always said that Hakimullah Mehsud has been taken out,? he said, adding, although it is also a fact that Mehsud?s death has never been confirmed.

He said action will be taken against the terrorists wherever they challenge the writ of the government.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has demanded an early release of funds due against Kerry-Lugar Bill. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also asked for starting development projects.

The minister was talking to a delegation of the members of US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee led by its Chairman Howard L. Berman that called on him here on Monday.

US delegation was apprised of Pakistan’’s financial problems. Congressmen assured Pakistan for taking up the matters regarding implementation of the Bill in next round of Strategic Dialogue to be held in July.

PM seeks US help for foreign markets access

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Monday said the economic challenges that Pakistan is faced with are directly linked to its war against terrorism.

Pakistan, at this critical juncture, hence needs assistance by way of market access through Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) plus regime and through passage of Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) Bill by the United States Congress to be able to address the root causes of terrorism, he added.

The prime minister was talking to a delegation of the members of US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee led by its Chairman Howard L. Berman that called on him here at the Prime Minister House on Monday afternoon.

Prime Minister Gilani underlined the imperative need for creation of new employment, development of infrastructure, provision of education and health facilities as well as enhanced security in the militancy affected areas to defeat the phenomenon of extremism for the safety and security of not only Pakistan but also the world at large.

He expressed the hope that the US Congress would play its crucial role also in fast-tracking the disbursement of pledged economic and security assistance to strengthen the hands of his Government in pursuing these goals.

The prime minister stated that despite great human and material sacrifices, Pakistan had remained steadfast in fighting the menace of terrorism and its Armed Forces had achieved remarkable successes in the process.

Sri Lanka win toss, bat against Zimbabwe

PROVIDENCE, Guyana: Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and decided to bat first against Zimbabwe in their World Twenty20 Group ?B? match here at the Providence Stadium on Monday.

Sri Lanka, who needed to win to qualify for the second round Super Eights after losing the tournament opener to New Zealand by two wickets, suffered a huge blow before play began when star off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a groin injury.

Suraj Randiv came in for Muralitharan and Thissara Perera, a medium-pace all-rounder replaced Chanaka Welegedara.

This was the first match of this World Twenty20 proper for Zimbabwe, who defeated both reigning champions Pakistan and Australia in warm-up fixtures.
