Army fully capable to defeat any threat: COAS

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday said that Pakistan Army is well equipped, highly motivated and fully capable to defeat conventional and un-conventional threats posed to the country.

Addressing officers of Command and Staff College, Quetta he said it is harmonization of socio - political, administrative and military strategies that will usher an environment of peace and stability in the long term. “Ultimately it is the will of the people and their support that is decisive. It is critical that Pakistan Army’’s efforts are backed by the nation.”

Urging the officers to maintain their focus on professional pursuits, the Chief of Army Staff emphasized that leadership would remain the decisive factor in outcome of any military campaign and officers must lead by personal example.

The COAS informed the audience that efforts were being made to equip the Army with modern and best possible hardware, within the given resources.

Hazara Gold Cup Hockey from June 27

ABBOTTABAD: the 51st Hazara Gold Hockey tournament will be played here from June 27.

Pakistan Hockey Federation has appointed former international player Mohammad Riasat as secretary of the tournament?s administration committee.

Moahammad Riasat while talking with Geo news said that teams of various departments besides all the four provinces would take part in the tournament.

The tournament will be played at the astroturf stadium in Abbottabad from June 27 to July7.

Senate body demands reduction in Hajj fares

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs Tuesday expressed concern over the recently announced Hajj policy for the year 2010 and demanded of the government to reduce Hajj fares for providing some relief to intending pilgrims.

Representatives of Ministry of Defence and Pakistan International Airlines briefed the committee members on Hajj fares to be charged from Hujjaj this year.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Maulana Saleh Shah on the direction of Senate Chairman Farooq H. Naek. The committee held a thorough debate on the Hajj policy 2010, as it has to submit its report before the House within seven days.

The meeting was attended by members of the committee and a large number of senators including Maulana Muhammad Khan Sehrani, Zahid Khan, Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro, Muhammad Ali Durrani, Raja Muhammad Zafarul Haq, Abbas Khan, Maulana Gul Naseeb, Nawabzada Mir Haji Lashkari Raisani, Mir Mohabat Khan Mari, Haji Muhammad Adeel, Mir Muhammad Ali, Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim, Dr. Muhammad Ismael Buledi, Muhammad Talha Mehmood and Mrs. Kalsoom Parveen.

Secretary Ministry of Religious Affairs Agha Sarwar Raza Qazalbash and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.

Meat smuggling to Afghanistan; CJ seeks report

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday sought reports from Chief Secretaries Khyber PakhtunKhwa and Balochistan within 15 days over reported meat smuggling to Afghanistan and Iran.

He issued direction on an application of Meat Merchants Welfare Association.

They have claimed that meat and living animals were being smuggled unlawfully to Iran and Afghanistan, which caused a rise in the price of meat and its deficiency in the market.

They further requested to impose ban on the export of the animals to cater the needs of public at large.

Similarly, Chief Justice also took suo moto notice on an application of Muhammad Ashraf Khan resident of Railway Officers Colony, Lahore and directed Chairman NAB to file comments within 7 days.

The applicant had alleged that NAB authorities arrested his brother and tortured him in detention. He prayed for recovery of his brother and sought justice.
