SINGAPORE: Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sharad Pawar took over as International Cricket Council (ICC) president, becoming the second Indian, after Jagmohan Dalmiya, to occupy the top post.
The ICC annual conference week culminated with Pawar taking over as the seventh ICC President, succeeding Englishman David Morgan, who concludes his two-year term at the end of the week.
Dalmiya was the first Indian to be elected for the post, in 1997.
The annual conference week started with the Chief Executives` Committee (CEC) meeting and the ICC Executive Board discussing the nomination of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard for the role of ICC Vice-President.
The main agenda for the CEC meeting was the subject of the Future Tours Programme 2012-20, including possibility of having ICC Test and ODI leagues.
Meanwhile, Former Australia Prime Minister John Howard has said that he will not step aside as the nominee for the International Cricket Council?s vice-presidency despite being snubbed by the body on Wednesday.
Howard said he had been given no indication as to why his candidacy was blocked by a reported six of the 10 major cricketing nations at the ICC`s meeting in Singapore.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the government will ensure continuation of welfare programs, such as, Sasti Roti scheme.
During meeting with members of the provincial assembly belonging to various districts, Shahbaz Sharif said the Sasti Roti and Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan programs are not less than a blessing for the poor, destitute, laborers, orphans and widows. The welfare programs have been initiated in the province for deprived segments of the society, he added.
The Punjab Chief Minister linked the building of flourishing society with the supremacy of justice. ?I have taken on the mission of ensuring quick and affordable dispensation of justice to the people,? he added.

KARACHI: Two major universities ? Punjab University and Karachi University ? have received the degrees of 419 parliamentarians for verification while NED University has okayed 4 degrees.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) sent degrees of 313 members of National and provincial assemblies to Punjab University which has formed a committee to complete the process of verification in 15 days.
Vice Chancellor Karachi University, Pirzada Qasim said the university has received degrees of 106 lawmakers including those of Farooq Naik, Shahla Raza, Nisar Khuhro, Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, Rehman Malik and Raza Rabbani.
NED University received degrees of four members, Murad Ali Shah, Muhammad Farhat Khan, Tayyab Hussain and Basant Lal. The university declared all the four degrees authentic.
Meanwhile, degrees of all the Balochistan cabinet members have also been forwarded to HEC for verification.
Verification process has also been initiated for grade-17 officers in Balochistan on the directives of HEC.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority has informed the sub standing committee of Senate that explosive scanners imported from China should be used for checking of vehicles only keeping humans away at a distance of 40 kilometers.
A meeting of sub committee constituted to evaluate radiation impact on humans was held here.
The interior ministry officials informed the chairman committee Senator Talha Mahmood that four scanners will be imported from China among which two have already reached Pakistan. These scanners will be installed at four entry points of Islamabad.
Nuclear Regulatory Authority officials told the committee that interim permission to operate the scanner has been given till July 28. China will carry out maintenance for one year, which will later continue by Pakistani officials.

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said Jang Group-launched Aman ki Asha would go a long way in taking down the tension between the two countries, Geo News reported Thursday.
Talking to Pakistani journalists here, he lauded Pakistan for having taken up good practical steps to abolish the hideouts of extremists.
Mumbai Attacks aggravated the ties between the two countries; however, the Jang Group-sponsored project ?Aman ki Asha? will help scale down the tension between the two nations.
Responding a query regarding his Pakistan visit, Krishna said the headway to resolve the issues, would be achieved through meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, adding it would enhance the outlook for peace in the region.
The five points are indispensable in restoring relations with Pakistan; these include elimination of safe havens for terrorisms and putting back in place the atmosphere of trust and trade.

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Religious Affairs has so far received around 50,000 Hajj applications under the government scheme.
Last date for submitting the applications is July 2, while the ministry would send 80,000 intending pilgrims under the government scheme to perform the most cherished religious obligation.
The ministry had extended the last date to submit Hajj applications from June 25 to July 2 due to low turn out of applicants mainly caused by the condition of Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) imposed by the Saudi authorities for Hajj this year.
The ministry has issued directives to the bank branches receiving the Hajj applications for accepting the applications along with photocopies of the receipts from those aspirants who have applied for MRPs.
The applications are being received through designated bank branches of Allied Bank Limited, Habib Bank Limited, Muslim Commercial Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, United Bank Limited and Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited.
