Queen?s Baton reaches Indian city Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: Even 27 years after he led the victory run at Lords in 1983, Kapil Dev still has it in him to outshine younger generation sportspersons. On Saturday, he was back in the place where he had learnt the basics of the game.

At the Sector-16 stadium, the Haryana Hurricane received the maximum attention of an ocean of people assembled there to witness the Queen’’s Baton Relay. From the moment he received the baton from the trio of Gurdish Pal Singh, Harjinder Singh and Tejinder Kumar till he waved at the crowd while sharing the dais with Commonwealth Games mascot, Shera, Kapil Dev stole the show.

?It feels good to return to the city that has given me everything, and it’’s a proud moment for me to be a part of the Queen’’s Baton Relay. I hope we will continue to see the same zeal in the people that we are seeing here today. I think the Indian players should do well since we will have the home advantage this time. I wish them all luck and may they give their best,? said the former Indian skipper.

Tahirul Qadiri says Parliament failed on terror issue

LAHORE: Tehreek Minhajul Quran founder Dr Tahirul Qadiri said the parliament has failed in stemming the wave of terrorism and there is no dearth of ulema giving Sharai (religious) cover to the menace, Geo News reported Sunday.

Addressing Tehreek?s Central Executive Committee here via telephone from Canada, he said the Parliament is the main culprit, which should announce its failure in tackling the issue.

Political leadership failed to put an end to corruption and terrorism, he maintained adding all the members of national and provincial assemblies know the hideouts and hotbeds of terrorism.

Tahirui Qadiri said, ?Media in today?s world is playing role of Parliament. It should guide the nation.?

The TMQ chief demanded the formation of a national commission headed by Chief Justice to eliminate the terrorism.

Rallies, demos to protest against Data Darbar attacks

KARACHI: Sunni Tehreek (ST) Sunday took out protest rallies in Dera Ghazi Khan and Jafferabad against the deadly attacks at revered Data Darbar in Lahore on Thursday night, Geo News reported Sunday.

The rally in Dera Ghazi Khan set off from central Jamia Masjid, and routing through Sadar Bazaar, arrived on Traffic Chawk, where the porters staged a demonstration against the Lahore carnage with vociferous slogans.

The orators demanded the arrest of culprits who orchestrated the incidents and befitting punishment for them. Strict security arrangements were made for the rally.

A protest demonstration was organized against Data Darbar mishap in Balochistan city of Jafferabad and subsequently a rally was taken out.

The rally?s participants staged a sit-in at Sindh-Balochistan Road and condemned the Lahore tragedy. The orators demanded the government for steps to improve the law and order situation in the country.

The ST?s long march against Data Darbar tragedy headed by Tehreek?s leader Sarwat Ijaz Qadri, arrived overnight in Sakrand, where the workers received the rally.

After arriving in Sakrand, the caravan left for Sukkar to be due in the city this evening and will move from various roads to Ghanta Ghar Chawk, where central gathering would be organized.

Four drown at Sandspit

KARACHI: At least four people drowned while swimming at Sandspit beach of Karachi today; however, another one has been rescued, Geo News reported Sunday.

A holiday once again proved disastrous to some families, when their four members lost their lives, while having fun at Karachi beach of Sandspit.

According to details, some people from Nazimabad went to Sandspit beach for picnic this morning. At least four people drowned in sea and one has been rescued. Three others are still unaccounted for. Navy divers are searching for the missing.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at 10am, after which the lifeguards present there rescued 17-year Omar, resident of New Alfalah. Omar?s friend is still missing.

Two people Bilal and Zafar from Manzoor Colony and Golimar also drowned and went missing; search for them is still on.

The mourning families said relief activities are not up to mark, adding there were no lifeguards on the spot.

When contacted, the lifeguards said Section-144 is in place thanks to the high tide from May to September; but, the people don?t accede to comply with the restriction.

WB satisfied at Pakistan?s economic growth

WASHINGTON: Expressing satisfaction over the economic growth of Pakistan, the World Bank (WB) has nodded for release of second trench of loan worth $14.60 corore, Geo news reported Thursday.

The second trench of loan will be spent on development of irrigation system, water management projects and reconstruction of Jinnah Barrage.

In a press conference held in Washington, WB officials said Pakistan showed promising progress in economic growth.

The press release said Pakistan will be provided with loans for forty years to write off on easy conditions along with 10 years of grace period.
