Sherry disapproves nikahnama initiative

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’’s Party leader Sherry Rehman on Thursday expressed her reservation over the inclusion of eight new clauses in the nikahnama (marriage bond) by the Punjab government.

The PPP leader said that step would strengthen the organisers of forced marriages.

She said the originators of such designs are the people who do not want the women to have their due status in society.

She expressed the hope that the Punjab government would realise the real motive behind this step very soon adding this decision would ultimately be withdrawn.

Sherry said that the country was facing a number of challenges at present and some forces want to further aggravate the situation by instigating new issues.

Zulfiqar vows action against encroachments

KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza has said that all the coalition parties are on one page on putting an end to the encroachments, pledging an action in this regard irrespective of any political pressure.

He said this while talking to media men here after a seminar titled ?Karo-Kari and Responsibility of Police? organized jointly by Sindh Police and Hunited Nations Development Program.

Dr. Mirza said Karo-Kari (honour killings) assumed a shape of ?cancer? during a period of Marshal Law. He said clans and tribes were divided under a plan on the basis of ethnicity during the period of dictatorship.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Dr Babar Awan termed Chairman Task Force CM Punjab, General Ziauddin Butt (retd) as biggest suicide bomber who ripped through the democratic system, saying that he was the reason behind Musharraf’’s martial law.

Talking to the media persons outside the Parliament House on Thursday, he said that there was military coup because of Butt and, he added, the democracy suffered for nine years. Babar said that democracy remained lost in the darkness for the last nine years due to General Butt.

He asked that the nation wanted to know why the enemy of the democracy has been made the chairman of the task force of Punjab Chief Minister. Babar deplored that what comes off a system in which a proclaimed offender is made prosecution in-charge.

Parents” signature, medical check up made mandatory in nikahnama

LAHORE: Punjab government has introduced eight new clauses in nikahnama, making would be couple’’s medical checkup, their pictures and parents” signature as witnesses as mandatory.

Local Government and Community Development department of Punjab government has issued instructions to Divisional Commissioners, DCOs and Administrators to make sure the entry of marriages in official documents according to new nikahnama.

Medical check up was necessary to help reduce birth of disable babies.

New requirements include, would be couple’’s medical checkup, their pictures, parents” signature as witnesses, writing date of birth of the groom in place of age and etc.

Met office predicts isolated rain, thunderstorm

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department on Thursday forecast dust-thunderstorm with rain for few places of Lower Sindh, Upper Punjab, Southern Balochistan and Kashmir during next 24 hours.

According to met office, a shallow westerly trough lies over upper parts of the country and pre-monsoon currents of weak intensity are penetrating into eastern parts of the country.

The weather will remain hot and dry weather in upper parts of Sindh and Balochistan during next few days.

The highest maximum temperature was recorded at Nokundi and Dalbadin 44 (C).
