Germany says terrorism suspect held in Pakistan

BERLIN: Germany says Pakistan has arrested a German wanted on terrorism charges at home.

The Foreign Ministry said Saturday that Pakistani authorities had confirmed they were holding a man from Frankfurt identified as Rami M.

A ministry spokesman didn”t comment on media reports saying Rami M. was wanted in Germany for membership in a terrorist group, nor on reports he was planning a terrorist attack on Germany’’s embassy in Islamabad.

Der Spiegel magazine and Berliner Zeitung daily reported that Rami M. had phoned the embassy, asking for documents to leave Pakistan.

They reported the embassy asked him to come in June 21 but was warned he planned an attack. The reports said Pakistani authorities arrested him before his embassy appointment.

Mirza directs action plan to curb extortion in Karachi

KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza has directed the heads of police to chalk out on immediate basis an action plan to put a strict check on elements issuing threats to businessmen for extortion money and kidnappings for ransom.

According to a statement issued by Sindh Home Department, the Provincial Home Minister has taken note of the news reports regarding issuance of threats to businessmen for extortion money and kidnappings for ransom.

Dr. Mirza also ordered Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) to immediately submit a detailed explanation in this regard and take all possible steps with regard to provision of security to the business community.

He directed that combined patrolling by police commandoes and Pakistan Rangers be carried out in industrial areas during working as well as off days.

Protesting victims move towards native areas

HUNZA: Land sliding continued in nearby areas of the Hunza lake and the protesting victims of the artificial lake went to their native areas

They were protesting against the meager government compensation package.

They demanded to meet Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan or Governor Gilgit Baltistan failing in which they moved to their areas. They were protesting near the spill way for the last four days.

They crossed the spillway over ropes to express their anger.

Nawaz in damage control move

LONDON: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has tried to defuse the tension created yesterday by an anti-media resolution adopted by the Punjab Assembly. He eulogized the role media played to strengthen the democracy and condemned the resolution.

All political parties in the Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a unanimous resolution against the media. The parliamentarians made scathing remarks against journalists, terming them blackmailers amidst boycott of the assembly proceedings by media persons.

He was addressing a press conference here in London, where he has gone to look after his ailing wife.

He was of the view that MPA Sana Ullah Mastikhel be expelled from the party for introducing such a resolution. Nawaz shied away from sending the MPA out of the party being the party chief and put the onus on Shahbaz Sharif to act against him.

PML-N chief said the MPA Sana Ullah was using the party for his personal gains. He termed fake degree holders ”cheaters”.

Meanwhile, the journalists observing across the country observing black day to protest the resolution. The journalists? bodies organized protest gatherings at various cities and towns and took out protest rallies.

Anti-media resolution not part of party policy: Shahbaz

RAHIMYAR KHAN: Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that the passage of resolution against media was not part of the policy of Pakistan Muslim League-N and vowed that ?we will together scrap this resolution?.

Addressing a program held to distribute lease documents of 2118 acres land to 123 agriculture graduates here, Shahbaz Sharif said the anger of journalists is valid. ?I also said this yesterday that the sacrifices rendered by journalists deserve praise,? he added.

The Chief Minister said 73000 acre land has been distributed in the first phase.

He said land will be distributed among graduates across Punjab so that cultivation of land is undertaken using modern techniques. Land will also be given away to the graduates majoring in forestry in the days to come, he announced.

KP receives Rs25bn of net hydel power profit

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has received Rs 25 billion on account of net hydel power profit, KP Finance Minister Humayon Akhtar Khan told a gathering here today.

He pointed out that the provincial government was not facing any financial crunch. He denied reports about Rs 10 billion State Bank of Pakistan overdraft adding that the KP government would soon pay back all the SBP arrears.

The received amount would be spent on power generation projects, he added.

F-16 squadron leaves for US

ISLAMABAD: The squadron of F-16 jets, a part of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) left for America today to take part in multinational armies exercises.

According to spokesman of PAF, PAF squad will participate in ?Red Flag? war games of multinational armed forces. The exercises will begin from July 15. Pilots, technicians and senior officers of PAF are taking part in these exercises, he added.
