Check posts to be set up in areas cleared of terrorists: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Friday said he would meet his Indian counterpart on the sidelines of the of the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.

Talking to media after addressing the first annual convocation of Islamabad Model College for Girls F-10/2, he said the talks would help boost the bilateral ties of the two countries.

Ruling out the division of Punjab into further provinces and said the country could not afford such venture at the present challenging times, adding he was not in favour of the fifth province, as it is in conflict with his party?s thought and manifesto.

The Prime Minister said the country was passing through difficult internal and external challenges and urged the politicians not to invoke such ideas by realizing the gravity of situation.

He said the formation of further provinces required constitutional amendment, which does not seem possible as the political parties were not united at the moment.

?We cannot afford to have more provinces. It would be like opening up a pandora?s box.?

When asked about possible influx of Taliban into Pakistan territory after US forces? operation in Afghanistan?s Helmand province, the Prime Minister said the government would take all possible measures not to let anyone destablize the country.

Gilani said he made it clear to the visiting French delegation that there is need to stop the cross border infiltration in Pakistani territories by Taliban fleeing from the operation of Nato-led forces in Helmand.

About the ongoing operation in Malakand division, Gilani said the success achieved in securing the area from terrorists was a result of enormous sacrifices laid by the Pakistan army.

The Prime Minister said the check posts would be established in areas cleared of terrorists including Malakand and further appointments would be made in the security forces.

Responding a question, he said the recent hike in petroleum prices was approved in the Finance Bill, not out of his will.

She said the Carbon surcharge was a part of Finance Bill and its implementation was an automatic process after cabinet?s passage of the budget, which has nothing to do with the Prime Minister?s directives.
