Zilzal dike breaches; evacuation underway

MUZAFFARABAD: The embankment of earthquake-created Zilzal lake in Azad Kashmir, crumbled down, causing the inundation of over two dozens houses.

The dike breach led Jhelum River to rise posing threat to the nearby localities.

According to reports hitherto received, the rising water has deluged several houses and the local people are seen evacuating to the safer places.

According to the government sources, the relief activities have been started at the affected site.

This Zilzal Lake is almost 3.5 Kilometer long and 350 Feet deep and was created after the earthquake of 8th October 2005, when a mountain slided into the valley. This blocked the way of river and five village were buried under the mountain, causing 575 deaths.

In two years, this huge lake was created, now there is an exit for the over flowing water. Lake is near Chikkar and has assumed a status of beautiful summer station at a distance of 46 Kms from Muzaffarabad, situated on top of the mountain on the southern side of Muzaffarabad.
